IF the machine is full of soot, the owner of the rental cabin should be aware that his heater ruined your machine.- and possibly reimburse you.

Based only on the OP's initial statement, I suspect he IS the owner (or at least the lease holder) - thus he probably sees it as his back that has to carry the load.
