Sorry to ask............

Post by gailzee » Sun Mar 06, 2005 8:02 pm

has anyone experienced an increase of bloody noses since starting CPAP?
Can this obviously due to pressure up the nose?
Any ideas on how to eliminate this problem?
Use Swift nasal pillows.
Gross, huh?

Or replace the fine blood you normally use with folgers crystals.

Won't help, but at least instead of BLOODY noses, you'll have COFFEE noses.

(To try to answer the question seriously, however...)

I have not noticed it. Of course, I'm still struggling, and probably don't average more than 4 hours a night with it on, before I get frustrated and take it off.

Then again, my pressure is only at 9, so perhaps this is something I'd experience more with a higher pressure.

OH! Do you have a heated humidifier? Without one, CPAP can really dry up the sinuses, and *THAT* could lead to more bloody noses.

I have the htd humidifier, its the new GK H2O goes with my new 420E.
Liam1965 wrote:(To try to answer the question seriously, however...Glad your gray matter is better. My apap is set at starting of 5 to 14. I've averaged only a 10.5-11. I have the software so I'm able to follow how good/bad I'm doing.
Are you finding your mask easier to deal with than you were several wks ago?
Hopefully........

Oh well, it was a thought. Try upping the humidity, unless you're already at maximum or getting rainout, that's all I can think of.

I'd probably also mention it to your doctor, just in case it's unrelated and an important symptom.

Just in case.

(Because remember, I'm (say it with me now) NOT A DOCTOR.)

Liam, who isn't, y'know.

Heated Humification

Post by gailzee » Sun Mar 06, 2005 8:24 pm

thanks for suggestion. Can anyone tellme around what average they're most comfy with humidification? I can't stand that rain forest feel, so I've been keeping the # setting at about 1.5-2.0. The max is 5. I'm going to up it to the #2 itself and see if that's better. Can't hurt.
Thanks.
I know I'm not a dr. either, or a RT, DME, and any other spare initials out there. Just trying to apap into comfort.

Gailzee,

The bloody noses are from the air drying out you sinuses. The AYR jell (no script needed) will help and as much humidity as you can tolerate will also help.
The Folgers will not help.
Sincerely,

I drink tea. Let's see how far off track we can go and annoy a whole new crop of pap'ers, who like coffee versus tea.

I will get the AYR saline gel tomorrow
Thanks for the tips.

Off to go find some decaf. It's late.

Hi Gailzee,
Sorry about your bloody noses! A few suggestions:
1. Call your Dr. and get checked to be sure it's not another serious medical issue. For example, high blood pressure can also cause nosebleeds.
2. Crank up that humidifier to the max. It will help. If you experience rainout, wrap the hose. Get as much humidification as you can.
3. I'd change masks. Get those things out of your nose. It may be an allergic reaction or just the irritation of the nasal pillows. Some people can't tolerate them. I started on nasal pillows 9 years ago and loved them at first, but ended up with a sore, irritated nose.
4. Ocean makes a nose wash system. It does not require a prescription. My surgeon recommended it to me when I had a deviated septum and UPPP surgery, and I've found it very beneficial over the years. It keeps you clear and the tissues in your nose are hydrated.

gailzee, I take my tea unsweetened with just a splash of lemon.

How do you like yours?

I like going off topic ........better than going off half-cocked
