Sleep Study last night....wow

Post by gmcateer » Tue Oct 10, 2017 6:46 pm

Tech said I was a a mix of stopping breathing and very shallow breathing and the "occurances" were measured between 70 and 100 per hour.

It was a split study so after an hour or so they put the mask on me...and it was amazing. Once I figured out not to breathe out my mouth....it was great. Did not need a drink all night (normally go through a large water due to dry mouth), did not have to get up at all (normally 4-6 times), woke up fully alert and rested. Did not realize it was before 6am still until after he unhooked me from everything.

If i can get a full night sleep like that every night I would buy the equipment myself.

Tomorrow I meet with the doctor to review results and move forward on the equipment. Can't believe I have to wait for more insurance approval...so frustrating. It's like tasting something amazing and then....nope, you cannot have it.

Very glad the cpap worked well for me though. I was concerned about not seeing any positive results.

Congrats. Some see improvement immediately, others takes time and effort.

stopped breathing is apnea
shallow breathing is normal
reduced airflow is hypopnea
could you please explain what the connection is between what you wrote and what the op wrote is?
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

No, shallow breathing is not necessarily "normal."

Without my 'pap, my breathing goes extremely shallow and I end up with severe inflammation due to lack of oxygen.

Wow, seeing the doc within a couple of days is AMAZING! Be sure to review machine choices before you go in. An Apap is your best choice, in most of our opinions. Look for the list of machines that work with sleepyhead.

Followup with Doc this morning.

Test without CPAP:
126 occurances per hour
Oxygen Saturation down to 58% (should be about 90%)
Longest point of not breathing 58 seconds
No deep sleep
No REM

WIth CPAP:
No occurances
OxSat 92%
No points of not breathing
Deep Sleep almost immediately
Extended REM cycles

My insurance took 2 1/2 weeks to approve the study. Was assuming another week to get the machined. Doc suggested I call the distributor as they will many times take credit card info as deposit until Insurance Billing processes so you can get machine sooner. They called me back within an hour, my copay was $95 and they validated my insurance, picking the unit up today. Honestly I feel like crying I am so happy.

The very worst part was getting 5 or so hours of amazing sleep, then going back to "normal" last night. Really really looking forward to tonight.

My first night at home with my CPAP, I realized how long it had been since I had woken up without a headache.

It wasn't instantly perfect, but it was instantly better.

When you get your machine come back and post the exact model name that you see on the front of the machine.

Congrats on getting things rolling so quick and your pre cpap AHI was really, really, really bad...no wonder you felt so good after the titration study.
I predict you will take to this like a duck to water. Now you may have some bumps in the road occasionally (we all have had them) but nothing that can't be handled or hasn't been met by someone in the past.

======

i have textbooks that say when sleeping shallow breathing IS NORMAL

shallow breathing does NOT mean desats or inadequate oxygen or anything abnormal
shallow breathing is not hypopnea

dont know how you get imflammation from shallow breathing
It all depends on how you define it dude. stop being so literal. Hypopnea is a form of shallow breathing, it is just more "shallow" than the "normal" "shallow" breathing you have when you sleep. It is too "shallow".

Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"

It took me 16 nights before I felt positive results from having my CPAP machine. I am in awe that you felt it during the sleep study. That is AWESOME!

Immediate results during the sleep study! Awesome!
I had no idea how significant that was--when it was me;
but nothing beats really good motivation to make cpap work.
It's not always a "breeze", but with good sleep (finally) it can seem that way.

I had a similar sleep study. My first night at home afterward, I actually had a dream that the doctor was making me wait 6 months to get my machine. I was angry. I wanted my machine NOW. So, even in my sleep, my brain knew exactly what had made the improvement, and it wanted one NOW.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?
