AHI numbers jump from <1 to 4 and 5 in one day!?!

Post by Phil_in_CA » Wed Aug 30, 2017 4:52 pm

Hello all,

It's been a long time since I've posted, and things have gone pretty well. But, now, I have an issue that is puzzling me.

My total AHI has been running at or <1 for a very long time, BUT about four days ago my AHI jumped to around 4-5! I can't think of what could have caused this, as I am very careful that my sleep architecture is held the same, the machine (ResMed AirSense10) has not been adjusted or anything. I did travel with it, but I have always been careful with my gear. We have even gone overseas with a PR Sys One with no problems.

I was wondering if there was anyone here who has had a similar issue, or has a clue what I might check.

It's almost comical to look at my Sleepyhead data and see the overview numbers all so low and then, BAM, skyscrapers for the last four days... :/ It would be funny, but I don't feel so good either... blood pressure is up, which is a symptom of poor CPAP results.

Oh well, I'm gonna go disassemble the AS10 and look at it in pieces and reassemble slowly and see if anything stands out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best wishes to all,
Phil

Which category of event increased?

What are your current settings?

Care to post an image so we can get an idea what you are looking at?
Not the overview but a recent high AHI detailed report night.

Try to think of anything that has changed.

Any noises at night waking you up.
Mask getting old and not fitting well?
Any aches causing seep problems?
Sleeping in a different position?
Change in medication? (add one, skip one? change dosage?)
any chance settings got changed?
weather change affected sleep comfort?
mattress or pillow change, or going bad?
allergies?
sick?

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Did the AHI go up for 1 night or has it continued that high. I doubt that it is the machine..disassembly will void the warranty.

I am very new at this, but I've noticed that my AHI jumps way up if I waken in the night and can't get back to sleep for awhile. It happened last night - my AHI was 3.3 (a good number for me) when I woke up around 3:30AM. Tossed and turned for an hour or so before falling back to sleep. When the alarm went off at 6, AHI for the night was 7.7. So it could be as simple as something like that. Another thing I've noticed is that if my mask leaks and I sleep through it rather than waking up and fixing it, my AHI goes up.

Thanks for the replies.

I have considered your suggestions and nothing seems to fit, but since we've gone from, basically, sea level to 7000 feet, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I increased the pressure from 9.5 (prior normal) to 10 and got a modest improvement in total AHI, but not low enough. I increased pressure to 10.5 and am getting AHIs of 2-2.5. I may increase another few tenths of pressure and see what happens.

As an aside, when my numbers went up, my blood pressure jumped up, too, so that's why I felt it was time to do what I can do... it has helped. My BP is down to normal or nearly so and AHI is much improved.
