Flapping - 3 hours in

Post by JWolfe » Tue Aug 29, 2017 5:14 am

Hi all, I'm having trouble with flapping - loudly - about 3hours into the night. It's horrible and wakes me up. I read a previous thread about that from 2009 but it didn't address how it could start 3hours into sleep. Amy ideas here? Thanks.

Please explain "flapping". Mask? Machine?

The flaps inside the piece between my hose and mask are making noise - snapping back loudly. My DME replaced my machine and power cord yesterday bc she thought the machine might be turning off. But it happened last night again.

(First I misread that first word and thought - wow! what a stamina! )

Do you have some sleepyhead data from the time when it happened?
Also, is it always after 3h?

Full face mask?
I coughed in one, which skewed the anti-asphyxia valve.
Straightened the valve with tweezers.
Then it stayed quiet--until I coughed again.
I think I "lost" that mask . . .

Check in. Talked to my DME who told me - as someone here did - that there could be water in the hose. There was. I asked him how to prevent that in the future; he suggested turning
The heat on the hose down and - amazing - put my C P A P lower than my head when I'm sleeping so excess water will flow back to the machine. I love the hive mind - and my DME. Thank you for the help!

Water in the tube like that is often described as making a "popping" noise which may be why no one knew what you were talking about. I think you want to turn the heat down on the humidifier so it doesn't generate as much moisture. And yes keep the hose straight going into the HH. Next time you hear it you can just lift the hose and any water should run back into the HH.

If you have a heated hose then turning down the hose air temp can make the water in the hose or mask worse...assuming that water was the culprit.
Warm air will hold more water than cool air. It's physics in action.

Now if you don't have a heated hose then turning down the heat to the humidifier can reduce the moisture in the air and lessen the chance of condensation from happening. If you do that your nose might not like having less moisture though.

There are many ways to battle condensation/water in the hose or mask depending on what your preferences are and whether you have a heated hose or not.

Lowering the machine can help sometimes because it uses gravity to help drain the water back down to the water chamber but it doesn't always work so great. I had it happen to me just a couple of weeks ago...it just wouldn't drain well enough to stop the racket despite my holding the hose totally vertical in the middle of the night.
See this thread posts # 2 & 3 for different options for controlling condensation in the mask or hose.
