Need clap?

Post by Davidmorgan » Fri Aug 25, 2017 11:56 am

Brand new on cpap and I'm not loving it. Didn't sleep at night my whole life and was tired all day. Ten years ago my new wife said that's not normal and I should get a prescription for something. I've been on temazapam and amatryptatine for ten years and been fine. My doctor retired and the new doctor acted like the sky was falling when she saw the drugs I was on. I had to tAke a drug test and see a sleep dr to justify my need. He insists I need to get off temazapam and sends me to. Sleep study. The results of the sleep study come back and I have sleep apnea. I look it up and sleep apnea is a side affect of temazapam. So I say take me off and give me something else. Nope, same Dick that looked at me like my hair was on fire because I wanted to continue using the drug that's been working for ten years Says to stay on the drug and get a cpap. Now with the drug and the cpap I get no sleep at night and can barely stay awake in the day. I'm 6'3 220 and can bench press more than I weigh. I walk all day for a living and have perfect sleep hygene. No booze no caffeine same bed time. No tv in bedroom. My question is should I be looking for a new doctor.

I think you should correct the heading...we don't deal with the Clap in this site.

Apnea is NOT repeat NOT a side effect, let alone the cause or anything else of apnea... So if you want help, we need the results of your study and if you were prescribed a machine and pressure settings for it, please tell us about those. Gotta start somewhere.

And btw, the business about weight, age, etc etc. is all old myths... many of us are younger, thin women!

I too was on a drug for something unrelated to sleep and was sleeping semi-OK, until my doctor took me off of it because it wasn't needed for the primary cause anymore. Needless to say, I started waking up all night and being totally exhausted all day. I asked for something to help me sleep and was instead sent to a sleep study where it was determined I have a LOT of disturbances and breathing issues, but very little apnea.

I was still prescribed a CPAP machine and nothing to help me sleep. So far, the only thing to come out of it has been a herniated disk in my neck from (most likely) the change in sleeping position after 7 days of using CPAP.

Then, I couldn't even get anything for the pain - it's like doctors don't want to prescribe any drug anymore!

Is this just another one in denial and looking for someone to validate that he not use CPAP?

It could be possible that the drugs might be responsible for your sleep apnea diagnosis. Your doc should have weaned you off the drugs however before sending you for the sleep study to make sure positive results were not induced by the drug medications.

You can either do your own research on the drugs you have been taking with regard to metabolic half life of the drug ... how long it takes to get out of your system or leave it up to your doc to determine if you need to retake the sleep study. I believe that we as individuals have the most vested interest in our own health and therefore should do our own research and use doctors simply to lead us in the right direction ... the Latin root for doctor is "to teach". So if your doctor is not teaching you how to take control of your own health condition(s), I would definitely seek another ... if not for new permanent teacher, then for alternative/second opinion.

Another one?

Anyway, is there anyone here who would continue to use xPAP if they absolutely no longer needed it? I thought so...

How much have you been taking? You probably are addicted.

That dick is smart. He doesn't want you going through benzo withdrawal while you are trying to adapt to CPAP.

What WAS your diagnosis. (It's a lot more than "has sleep apnea.") Do you have the one or two-page sleep study summary?

Do you know how to read your CPAP data? What does it show for AHI and leak level? Which machine model are you using? Which mask? Did you have dry mouth?

Funny thing is that I would miss pulling the blanket over my head if I didn't use CPAP!

I avoid opioids because constipation is pure MISERY.
(A good "deposit" is a thing of joy)
I consider myself lucky, because even when I am not pain-free, my tolerance is fairly high.

I agree. I have had to take opioids in the past after various surgeries. I take them no longer than absolutely necessary. The longest I have ever taken then was two weeks, and that was after mid foot stabalization surgery (fusion of various bones in foot and between foot and ankle). The doctor was surprised I came off of them as soon as I did.
