DreamStation tracking of obstructive vs hynopeas
DreamStation tracking of obstructive vs hynopeas
I am wondering if the DreamStation is known to record obstructive events and hypopneas in possibly a different way than my sleep study did? At my sleep study, it said 96% of my events were hypopneas vs the rest being obstructive. And yet, at home, some days the majority of my events are obstructive, sometimes more like 30%. Still very different ratio than in my sleep study. I'm wondering why I'm having obstructive events (but no snoring) now on cpap when I didn't have them much in the sleep study (which I realize represents just one night). And how would the snoring be gone if I'm having obstructive events?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I can't answer directly about any specific machine (BTW, I also have Dream Station).
What I can tell you is that a sleep test in an accredited sleep lab is more accurate because of all the sensors (plus the belt that measures respiratory effort).

Your sleep study events were happening while you were untreated. Your machine is doing a good job of controlling your hypopneas but still allowing some OAs to happen. You need to look at a few nights results to see what happens. It takes your body a few nights to get used to the machine and learning to breath with it. After a week of use, take another look at what is happening. Then, people here can help you make adjustments to your therapy if you are willing to do so.

About the terminology, hypopneas and apneas are both obstructive. A hypopnea is a partial obstruction of the airway. An apnea is a total obstruction.Rainmom17 wrote:At my sleep study, it said 96% of my events were hypopneas vs the rest being obstructive.

OK. I just think it's weird that I am now (with cpap) getting a lot of total obstructions when I didn't have many in the sleep study.

Not unusual. Every night is different. Especially in the strange environment of a sleep lab you may sleep (and breathe) very differently than at home in your own bed.Rainmom17 wrote:OK. We don't know what flow restriction criteria the lab was using in event category determination.
It is possible that the lab criteria might have been slightly different than the machine criteria.
It is possible that you are simply sleeping better and maybe just having a greater chance of having any sort of event.
It is possible that sleeping position is playing a part.
The end result is that you deal with what the machine is reporting because that's pretty much all that you have available and the criteria between events sometimes really isn't that big of a difference.
Like hyponeas are up to 80% flow reduction..and OAs are 80 to 100 %. There's really not all that much difference between a 79% reduction and an 81 % reduction other than what it gets called.

I've got a similar question. Sleepyhead software reports many more OA's than were reported by Encore Basic when using my Remstar M-Series. I've got to believe that either Sleepyhead or the Dreamstation reports them differently.

M series machines used a different algorithm than the DreamStation...and the M series won't work with SleepyHead.
2 different machines and 2 different algorithms.
You need to compare SleepyHead to Encore with your Dreamstation and I am betting the results will be the same.
Unfortunately your EncoreBasic won't work with the DreamStation...you need the latest Encore Pro 2.18xxx for that. If you want it let me know privately and I will point you to it.
The above was for greyhound.....I meant to quote it so it could easily be seen but forgot.

Good, practical advice, as usual from Pugsy.Pugsy wrote:The end result is that you deal with what the machine is reporting because that's pretty much all that you have available
