Successful APAP Therapy Warning!!!

Post by TXKajun » Sat Mar 05, 2005 6:54 pm

Hi folks! I've been away on business for a week. My rented, DME-supplied APAP (Goodknight 420E) travelled well and it was used every night, alllllllll night. When I returned home, my 420E with heated humidifier was waiting. It got hooked up Thursday night and used Thursday and Friday night with no problems. Humidified APAP works great! In fact, APAP works great!

Now for the WARNING:

I've been a successful hosehead for almost a month now and I was one of the fortunate few who took to it with no problems. Yesterday, however, was a bit of a set-back/downfall day. I was feeling SOOOOOOO darn good, when my 8 year old son asked me to help him practice throwing and catching baseball, I said yes. I'm 53 and in what I thought was pretty good shape. So, feeling ever-so-much-better from the APAP and having quite a bit more energy, I said "Sure, my boy. I'd LOVE to play catch with you." Of course, I thought I was plenty warmed up from 18 holes of golf that I'd finished about 1/2 hour earlier (like I said, I'm feeling WAY better!!). He threw, I caught. I threw, he caught. We got cocky and he threw a hard grounder to my right and I lunged down for it..........and managed to tear tendons in my right hip and knee! Now I'm hobbling around using a cane and taking pain medications. And it's all because of this successful APAP therapy! So, warning, warning, warning! Don't try and go out and keep up with your kid when you get to feeling better!!!!

Seriously, folks, this therapy works! Keep at it and keep reading the messages on this wonderful forum. To all who have been so helpful, thank ya'll from the bottom of my heart.

Hi TXKajun,

Sounds like you've almost thrown in the towel. Have a good night's sleep then use the cane to hit out a few fly balls!!

Hope you're not in too much pain and start feeling better. Isn't it great to have fun with your son, just make sure he doesn't blame himself for causing the old man a bit of a relapse.

Walk softly but carry a big stick and a hose!

Gang, it really does feel great to have enough energy to even consider playing with my son! He realizes it wasn't his fault.......and he did great on his baseball tryout today. (major proud smile!)

For all you new folks, I sure do have some words of encouragement (and for some of the not-so-new-folks, too!) I went into my sleep assessment about 6 weeks ago with very high hopes of finding out a root cause of many of my problems. Like so many of us (if not all of us), I've been tired for years and didn't know why. Then, the tragic news of Reggie White came out and I decided to get tested. It coincided with a regular Dr. appointment for a checkup to renew multiple prescriptions. I'd been complaining for over 3 years about not having any energy, being tired all the time, weight gain, blood pressure slowly heading upward, weight inching upward, mood and temper going downward, yep, the same things going on as all of us have experienced. My sweetie had gotten to the point where she spent most nights sleeping in the living room on the recliner.

It was a relief when the study came back with the diagnosis of "severe obstructive sleep apnea" because finally, there was an organic cause. It really wasn't all in my mind!

It took a week for the diagnosis to get down to my Dr, then he took a few more days to write the prescription for a CPAP unit, then a few more nights to convince my DME supplier to provide an auto PAP. I also found this wonderful board during my struggle and the folks here sure helped set me on the right direction. Thanks to all of you!!

Like I said above, I'm one of the lucky ones who took to this like a duck to water, and the results have been astonishing! I still have a bunch of sleep debt to pay off, but it's getting done one rested night at a time.

Folks, this stuff works!! Stick with it, bug your Dr, bug your DME, bug your insurance company, dig deep into your pocketbook if necessary. YOU are worth it! When I started on this journey, I kept saying "If I can just have enough energy to play with my son, I'll be happy." Well, in spite of a now-goofed up hip and knee, I'm smiling major big time!

See?? LOL

I have my life, my wife and my son back. Thank you Jesus! And thank you to all the wonderful posters on the board.

Sweet dreams!

Makes a BIG difference when you have a machine that helps compliance doesn't it?

TXKajun - it's always good to hear success stories. I am about a month behind you - I was diagnosed with OSA in January, I am picking up an APAP on Wednesday, and hope that I have similiar results to yours.

TX,

O-Yee-Yai! Sorry about your disagreement with your body on the subject of age... Super-glad to hear that you're doing well with the APAP (as am I). Great to hear about your kid's tryout, too.

Better get yourself healed up so you can get out there on the dance floor with those Cajun 2-steps and Waltzes.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!
(and Go Mariners).

I have the same machine as you. I've yet to feel that energized. If I had that energy, I'd think something was really wrong!!!
Do hope your tendons heal, and a great story.
Keep hosin'......

Tip for you....(for future references) "It's not necessary that you catch those hard grounders.....Just use your quickness to beat the ball to the contact point...get in front of the ball or knock it down. This will give you ample time to pick up the ball and jump to your feet and launch it towards first base..........or second if you're going for the DP.
Now....if you had been on BiPap therpy maybe you wouldn't have gotten hurt................................... Think I had better stop here........getting too deep ...even for me.

Great story.............Sorry for the useless "Chit-Chat"

Rich

PS Hey !! Just noticed.......my 80th Post !! Not bad for a second stringer !
