F&P Icon Premo issues

Post by sam.walker.92351 » Wed Aug 02, 2017 2:00 pm

I took my machine, which I've been using regularly for 3 years now, with me to get the results of a titration study. None of the settings needed to be changed so it wasn't plugged in until I got back home. When I did plug it in, it was dead to the world. I tried different outlets and straightening out the cord but nothing. About a half hour later I came back into the room and it was on. Worked fine last night but I'm worried. We are about to go on a long overseas trip and I don't want to be without a reliable CPAP machine thousands of miles from home. My insurance won't pay for a new machine for another couple of years. Any advice? My Medical Equipment supplier said they would buy it back which would give me money towards a new machine. Is this my best bet? If I do end up buying a new machine, what would you suggest? I've never been able to get data from my Icon Premo, either at home or in the doctor's office.

Thanks in advance.

Some questions.

How bad do you want to have the data you have been missing? The Premo has nothing but hours of use available.

How much will they "give" you for the Premo and then how much do they want you to come up with for whatever you might want from them?

What brands does this DME carry? Just the F & P or other brands.
My personal preference is for the ResMed or Respironics machines. I just like the data they offer better. It's more comprehensive and a bit easier to evaluate.

When is your trip planned for? As in how much time do we have to maybe find you something else if you don't want whatever deal your DME might offer?

What pressure are you currently using?

F&P Icon Premo issues

I'd like to know how I'm doing. Data could give me a better idea if the masks I'm using are working, leak rate, etc. It would be nice to have more information than just what I can get from the screen of the machine.

I will go see the DME tomorrow but over the phone she said $320 on buyback program. Don't know what the difference will be for a new machine. I have been getting Resmed masks from them so I'm hoping they carry their machines also.

We're leaving Aug 22 for two months in India, so a machine capable of running on 240 volts would be good too. I'm using a pressure of 13.5 although the titration study said 12 would be OK.

First find out what models they have.
If they do have ResMed avoid anything with AirStart in the model name...those are all bricks...even the apap models.

In the AirSense model line these are the models currently offered.

AirSense 10 CPAP machine....avoid this one...it has extremely limited data...not a total brick like your Premo but what I call a half assed brick. No graphs and only generic AHI (no event category breakdown) and only the 95% leak number which is easily skewed and misleading.

The full data machines
AirSense 10 Elite....fixed pressure cpap mode only machine..which is what the Premo is
AirSense 10 AutoSet and the AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her...they have apap (auto adjusting pressure) mode as well as cpap mode available and the for Her model has an additional special apap mode that is reportedly kinder gentler. I doubt you would benefit from that special mode.

If they have Respironics machines

DreamStation CPAP....again a half assed brick like the AirSense 10 CPAP...avoid it

full data
DreamStation Pro...fixed pressure but does have a limited apap trial mode available
DreamStation Auto CPAP...like the AutoSet models...has both fixed cpap and auto adjusting apap modes available full time.

Pick the one you want and ask them how much you would have to pay.
Then compare it with online prices for same machine. Check Amazon...I know a guy who got a DreamStation Auto CPAP with humidifier and heated hose for just a little over $400. I have seen the ResMed's also but priced higher and often "out of stock but will be in at so and so date".
There's also the secondary market...I know a forum member who has both new and used machines available and he is trustworthy.

I don't blame you for not wanting to take the Premo on an extended trip. Something just doesn't sound right with it. Might be okay to have as a back up but I don't know how much I would trust it.

Fisher Pickles are 2 years old full warranty. 5 years it's a flat fee to get a replacement. After 5 they won't touch it. The first 6 digits of the SN is the manufacture date, 2 digits each. year, month, day. If you prove a purchase date from a DME, they will go off that date.

At the DME today, my options were pretty limited. I had misunderstood what they were offering as a "buyback" program. It only applied to getting a new Icon, and $320 was my cost with the exchange. So that's what I did. I'll stay with this for another couple of years and then get a new one with the help of insurance, if we still have private insurance in two years.

So... the recall didn't help? Our host sells new ones for $395. Doesn't sound like much of a trade-in

I'd like a new full data machine but I didn't want to buy it out of pocket so this seemed like the best option for me right now. This one just has to last two years and I made it three years with the last one. Not the best outcome but I'll just live with it until I can make the change with insurance help.
