Smart Card Reader Question

Post by cpapjack » Wed Oct 04, 2006 2:04 pm

I cringe when I ask this question, 'cause I know it's been asked before, but I've spent the last 2 hours searching through previuos posts and can't find anything.

I remember seeing a post before of someone who was able to successfully use a less expensive card reader with their S8 smartcard. I think the cost was around $34.99. Please forgive me for asking this again.

I ordered one last week and will post a review, pictures and tips when I get it working.

As Wulfman said the real deal has been reduced to $65. If you need other supplies then $100 gets you free shipping.

So consider the shipping in there too.

I just installed the real one and it worked wonderfully.

However--cpap.com is not selling any resmed products at this time--it says on top of the page "this product is not available at this time", or something to that effect...
wonder what is going on between cpap.com and resmed? very interesting....

That last one was me. Guess I wasn't logged in.

By the way, what is the deal with the Resmed products not being sold for the past few days?

I thought the prices had to change, not that they wouldn't be sold.

I have one, and it works fine. There is a sweet spot where you have to insert the card since there is no guide for the ResMed card like on the branded reader, but with the aid of a couple of marks on the reader, I get it in right almost every time now.

I had tried to read the data off the card without the ResMed software, but was not successful. My PC saw that the reader was there, but I couldn't figure out anything past that. Once I got the drivers in that came with the software, all worked fine.

I need to Piggyback here with a question.

My machine is a ResMed AutoSet Spirit. I ordered the 5.7 AutoScan 5.7 for S8 Series, per advice from a CPAP.Com representative.

My understanding is that I will not need a Data Card reader because I will use a cable. I got this info from the first rep and another rep is double-checking for me before I open the software CD.

Is this ringing a bell for anyone? I'll be able to use the software, but will need to unplug the CPAP machine and cable it to my computer to read the data?

Thanks,
Allen (Still desperate for a really good night's sleep without crazy dreams)

The Spirit doesn't have a card slot for a card, so no reader is required. It uses a female to female DB-9 serial modem cable connecting from the machine to your PC serial port. In AutoScan, you select the Serial port and download from the machine. You can save each session into a patient file stored on the computer. Information it displays is very limited.

Darn it!
Is it going to provide me any more info than the machine itself does?

They're sending me the cable today.

Thanks Snoredog.

Yes, the Autoscan software will give you more details about the data. And yes, all you need is the cable to do the downloads from machine to your computer. Prepare yourself to have to listen to Autoscan trying to access the floppy drive (if you have a floppy drive) in your computer every few seconds. Aggravating to hear that grinding noise, but that's what it does.

When I used the S7 Spirit and Autoscan my main objection to the way Autoscan displays data was the graph. Poor display, imho.
