Hybrid mask and hose management.

Well after being told it would take a week to ten days for my equipment approval from the insurance company, it cleared in one day and I'm set up to receive my Remstar M w/C-flex and Hybrid mask. Is there any special way I need to "keep" my hose? I'm a side sleeper and just wondering if there are any tips to keep me tangle free or pulling the mask away while I sleep.

Don't have any tips because I can't manage it yet-that long elbow-adapter-hose connection asts like a crowbar and lifts the mask off my face.

First thing Is I keep my machine only about a foot off the floor next to the bed. Pulling the machine off a nightstand would be a bad thing.

I asleep on my side facing the edge of the bed so i just pull the hose up next to me in bed have never had any problems.

I use a clip to attach the hose to the sheet. I then tuck the hose under the covers with me. Never had any problems with the hose, even when turning over.

I keep my CPAP on the dresser next to my bed. It is about 6 inches higher than the bed, and about 2 feet from my head. I sleep on my back, I just lay the hose on my chest and I can easily flip to my sides as i have plenty of hose and i have never pulled the CPAP off the dresser. However I did pull hard enough once to pull the hose off of the Humidifier tank. I experimented with tying the hose over my head but when u do this with the hybrid and turn the elbow upward, the air from the exhaust ports hit the elbow and makes alot of noise. I quickly abandoned that idea because the noise is loud (even though I sleep with a box fan blowing directly on me, it was still loud enough to bother me)

I use the short tubing from my Activa mask in between the exhaust port of the Hybrid and connect it with a connector to the large tubing, its mucn more flexible that way, and then I use the velcro strap from my old Swift mask to take that short piece of Activa tubing and partially bend it U-shaped so that the exhaust port is still pointing down but the smaller tubing bends up by my shoulder and I use that small piece of velcro to attach the tubing to the side of the headgear and VOILA, no tubing tugging on my mask, the port doesnt' twist and turn and make loud noises and I can change sides without being clubbed in the head by the tubing. Its all good.

I too do pretty much what Suzy does. You can buy the short piece of Activa hose from cpap.com for about $12.
It works really well even if you don't tie it down to your mask. It just makes the setup more flexible so that the plastic elbow doesn't bother you. Although I think I will try tacking it to my mask like Suzy does. That sounds even better.

Paul, I have a digital camera, but no batteries at the moment otherwise I would take a couple pics to give you a better idea. Perhaps actually putting on the mask and standing in front of the mirror might give you a better image of what I'm describing. First here's a link to the connector tubing for the Activa.

You will also need a plastic connector to connect the shorter tubing to the standard tubing:

So while having the mask on, this smaller connector tubing is much more flexible less rigid than the long tubing that connects to your machine. You may do this next step towards either shoulder, but basically keep the exhaust port of the Hybrid mask pointing DOWNWARDS, if it gets turned upwards it blocks the exhaust holes and is very loud and you don't get as good CO2 washout. Keeping it down, take some of the short connector tubing and gather it and start bringing it up towards either shoulder. I then take a small piece of velcro (I use the vecro strip that came with my Swift mask) and wrap this "U" shape, or "Loop" of tubing to the side of the Hybrid headgear on the top strap so that when I turn from side to side nothing is pulling at my mask. Just make sure when pulling up some of the excess Activa connector tubing the exhaust port doesn't swivel upwards.

The setup I described in previous post works good for me because I keep my machine almost at bed level on my nightstand. If a person keeps their machine on the floor or lower level than nightstand, the whole arrangement I described with tacking up the excess tubing to the mask might not even be necessary because the tubing and exhaust port will be kept downwards because the main tubing will be heading towards the floor.

However, no matter where you keep your machine, either at bed level or on floor, the extra short Activa tubing (or similar short tubing) is very helpful in keeping the long tubing away from your body.

i just connect the short piece of tubing to my mask and then connect the short tubing to the regular long tubing. I don't seem to need that little connecting piece between the two tubings that Suzy showed. Works pretty well for me. Because of the extra swivel on the short Activa tubing, the whole setup is more flexible.

I use the same setup as Suzy and Mary.
It really allows more play between the hose and the elbow. Now, I'm not in a frenzy thinking that the next hose tug is going to pop the Hybrid's elbow from its socket!
Sure hope they change that aspect on Hybrid II, should they ever decide to make a second version !

Please put up a picture of what it looks like. I am hanging mine off the side of the bed over a small coat rack and I could use more hose. It sounds as if you have a more flexability. This being my favorite mask, it's worth going out of my way to make it perfect.
