Just make sure the water chamber is completely dry. I would put it in a box and put towels around it and hit the road.

Separate the humidifier unit; wrap each part in clean towels, t-shirts, or whatever.
Place in clean box or suitcase, padding with more fabrics, etc.
Label clearly, and carry in a safe place.

You could first put it in a gallon size zip lock baggie or plastic trash bag unused. Just in case any liquid gets spilled on the box you pack it in to make it waterproof.

Agree with the frog. I do this when packing my machine in my checked case for a flight, seeing as most cases supplied with the machines are not really cases are they

I would NEVER check my cpap.
EVERY airline has lost or damaged luggage, and Murphy is the monkey on MY back.

+1

My checked suitcase is much more traveled than I am. It goes off to exotic locations, while I travel a more mundane route. I want to be sure my CPAP machine arrives *with* me.

Plus, have you seen how baggage handlers throw suitcases? Even well padded, I'd be nervous my bag being thrown high in the air and landing hard. Or having a really heavy bag land on top of it. Or someone walking off with my suitcase before I could get to baggage claim.

Several years ago, my job required me to travel quit a bit. I used a hard-side suitcase and a 2 inch wide rainbow colored strap around the outside of the case. When I got to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on one of my trips, my suitcase did not survive the trip. It I hadn't had the strap around it, I doubt if I would have had any clothes to wear. I took my bag around to the airline counter, and politely asked the young lady if she could answer a question for me. When she said yes, I asked her how far they had to drop my suitcase to do that much damage to it. Of course, she said they didn't do it, and I assured her in no uncertain terms that it wasn't damaged like that when I checked it that morning. She said I should give them the bag, and they would send it in to see if it could be repaired. I told her no, this was the first day of a two week, five city trip, and I could not leave without a serviceable suitcase. I bought a new suitcase just like the damaged one and took the bill of sale to the airport along with my old suitcase. Her response was, "I can't write a check larger than $100". I told her that's fine, just write me two checks. She did! I will never put my machine in a checked bag.

Wouldn't the answer to this depend a lot on the mode of transportation? For short trips in the car, its been tossed in a tote bag, sometimes wrapped in a towel in case it got bumped. Just remember to empty the humidifier. They are actually pretty tough, so as long as it isn't being handled by airline baggage gorillas, it should survive with normal care.

Good point, Captain!
Since Chantilly said "new house", I would imagine same or nearby city--a ground trip.

A quick tip about baggage and baggage handlers. I bought a roll of the orange and black tape with the word FRAGILE on it. This can be applied to your bags before you get to the airport if you are flying domestically as bag drop is now automated at so many airports. While this may not guarantee better baggage handling it has to improve the odds. The other plus of doing this is that fragile baggage is usually stored on top of other luggage and therefore tends to be loaded onto the carousel first. This is my experience anyway.

dump the water out, stick it in a box... they're not that delicate.

last time I was in the hospital, one of the nurses dropped my s9 vpap auto on the floor... no damage, though I did figure I got lucky.

Nothing like a little guilt to barter for a back rub.
