Artificial Intelligence (AI) and CPAP, APAP machines
The general press and the technical press is full of information about Artificial Intelligence (AI). I am sure everyone has heard of self-driving cars, robots used in warehouses, robots used to do delivery in hospital etc.
The big thing they talk about now days is Deep Learning and software to do it.
It occurs to me that AI would be great for APAP machines. The software could learn from your sleep and optimize the APAP, or should I call it an AIPAP, to reduce events. In fact it might continuously learn to eliminate events. Deep Learning develops models and decision making models can be very complex and made more complex as AI learns. Also, an AI system could adjust as a person or their environment changes over time.
I read that doctors have to optimize control factors for APAP. That they try different settings and then see how it works over a month or so. There are just a few factors they have to adjust. Some times the factors drive a pressure increase that wakes the sleeper. AI could develop complex models which would be optimal and could have many factors and have very complex curves of increasing pressure preventing an event but not waking the patient.
I think the goal with AI might possibly be zero events for every evening. Since AI learns from failures as well as success it might be as the level gets very low it will stall out in improvement, unless perhaps there can be identified a "near" event to further optimization.
There are papers for using AI for Apnea in diagnosis, but I am not seeing the use of AI for running the APAP.
To have a new technology the first step is to imagine it and why it is necessary.

eh, no, not AI.sleepy1235 wrote:The general press and the technical press is full of information about Artificial Intelligence (AI). I am sure everyone has heard of self-driving cars, robots used in warehouses, robots used to do delivery in hospital etc.

Get OSCAR
Accounts to put on the foe list: dataq1, clownbell, gearchange, lynninnj, mper!?, DreamDiver, Geer1, almostadoctor, sleepgeek, ajack, stom, mogy, D.H., They often post misleading, timewasting stuff.

Great thought. Maybe you could get Elan Musk Captain Kirk, Bones and Scotty to join together and bring your creation to reality.

It's enough of a challenge to get a full data machine. But dream on maybe in another lifetime.

I'd go with a bucket of nano bots to hold your airway open, just tell them to go to the needed site and hold hands to keep the area open. Save the AI for important things like allowing people with spinal damage to function better. Jim

Are you even using some form of XPAP therapy currently? You don't have any information or equipment in your profile.sleepy1235 wrote:The general press and the technical press is full of information about Artificial Intelligence (AI). But, if you are using something, I get the impression you haven't taken control of your own therapy yet.
Your "pipe dream" would be extremely cost prohibitive in practice. You couldn't afford it, your insurance wouldn't pay for it and the medical equipment manufacturers and distributors wouldn't make it or sell it. They've been distributing the lowest-end "bricks" to users for years, to maximize THEIR PROFITS and having little regard for the end-users' therapy benefits (in too many cases). Just the fact that they even MAKE data-less "bricks", is proof of that.
Then, there's the realization that the VAST MAJORITY of users out in the real world don't like this therapy, don't want to use this therapy, give up on this therapy, and don't give a rat's behind about any data or how their therapy is working.
Good luck!

Re: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and CPAP, APAP machines
Now I am reminded why I don't post very often here.
However, in response to some of these postings.
1. AI is a practical technology that is here now and is being implemented in many things. For years it didn't make much progress, but in the last five years or so it is really taking off. As a technology it is becoming ordinary.
2. It isn't expensive. There is open source AI software from companies such as Google. Even inexpensive microprocessors can run it.
3. It is rapidly evolving with cycles of learning.
However, I have really wasted my time posting into a Trollspace.

Maybe you don't realize it, but these devices have to be thoroughly tested, the programs copyrighted and patented AND approved by the FDA. All that equals LOTS OF $$$$$$.
There are no XPAP machines that do use or could use "open source" software. The manufacturers would be susceptible to lawsuits up the wazoo.

Until the ultimate, intelligent machine is available,
Until all doctors are both caring and competent,
And until all we need for our healthcare is both available and affordable---
We need to provide the intelligence, motivation, and common sense we need to live in an imperfect world.

Great Post Chunkyfrog, Sorry I have to spoil on it, but I can't resist.
The ultimate, intelligent machine used to be available, it's name was Adam, then they made Eve and Snakes, it went downhill from there. Sorry Again, Jim

I'll wait eagerly for the "artificial intelligence" on some of these hypothetical cpaps to decide to strangle their human masters in their sleep.
