Any newbies using Hybrid???

Post by pivot » Sun Sep 10, 2006 12:36 pm

I have gone through 3 masks. Swift Mirage (felt the air was blowing too hard) then F&P 431 FF Mask, too bulky, now F&P 406 nasal mask. I am pretty sure I am a mouth breather and definitely a side sleeper. I asked my DME rep about the Hybrid and he thought it would be too difficult for me because I am new. Any advice???? Are there any other newbies successfully using the Hybrid.
THANKS!!!
P.S. I have the REMstar Auto M series w/cflex at 3

Hi pivot,

In addition to what people will post in your thread here about the Hybrid, you might find some of the discussions in the clickable link below interesting:

The PVC hanger (and other methods of keeping the hose up out of the way) can be seen here:

maybe you should ask your DME what he meant that you would have difficulties with Hybrid because you are a newbie. hybrid can be a difficult mask, but i'm not sure that the difficulties have anything to do with a person being a newbie--unless he means that the difficulties are so incredible that it might make a newbie give up on cpap. i think that could be true. (i'm an oldie and as soon as i clear up one hybrid problem, another appears. it takes a while to sort it out. i'm hoping it's worth it, but so far i'm not sure that it is.)

Tell him that you would like to try the Hybrid and if he is worried that you are too new for it assure him that you have your own support team(cpaptalk.com) to help you with it.

I am curious did he have one in stock that he showed you?

I think maybe it was the DME that was the newbie ... the Hybrid is one of the most expensive masks and if you are having your insurance pay for it they may only pay a certain amount for a mask regardless of the actual cost ... thus your DME may just be looking after his bottom line rather than your health.

As others have said, being a newbie patient has nothing to do with whether any mask will work for you or not.

In my opinion, if you have any problem with mouth breathing or mouth leaks, the Hybrid is definitely worth trying. My experience with Hybrid: viewtopic.php?p=102860#102860.

tooly125 makes an excellent point. Use this forum as a support group. The Innomed customer service (makers of Hybrid mask) are also helpful.

I will be glad to answer any questions I am able to.

I have been on cpap since July 27, 2006. The only mask I have ever used is the Hybrid. I have had no problems with this mask other than sore nares for a couple of nights(ayr gel & chapstick). I doubt that I would be 100% compliant with any other mask. I can sleep in any position, With the addition of PAD-A-CHEEKS I have no marks, It's easy to clean, and I can put on my glasses to see the clock or use the bathroom.
I researched what mask I wanted (mostly on this forum) and TOLD the DME & Insurance Co what I wanted. I was told that my face was to small, it wasn't a quality mask, it would ruin the cpap machine, a newbie wouldn't be able to tolerate it. I guess I proved them wrong!

Hybrid Woes

Post by walleyek » Sun Sep 10, 2006 9:42 pm

I've been trying it out for a bit. Have a Resmed S8 Vantage. Experimenting with Auto vs. CPAP w/EPR because like all full face masks I've tried it seems like I cannot get air out fast enough. My CPAP number is 11.8. Wish Resmed would offer a machine that has both Auto and EPR together instead of one or the other.

The nasal pillows have caused me troubles. My nose gets so darn sore it actually bleeds some. I don't know if I'll ever get used to nasal pillows. Someone mentioned KY jelly (yeah, like I have *that* right in the nightstand!).

I'm guessing I'll go back to my nasal-only mask w/ jaw strap...<sigh>

For slightly sore nares the ayr gel works well. When the nares are really sore the chapstick worked better.

..I used Bag Balm to condition my nares for nasal pillows. I found that
after two months of use, I don't need it anymore.

+ Aussie heated hose.

Brenda, in that litany of things the DME spouted while trying to discourage you from ordering the mask YOU wanted to try, this was the funniest (dumbest) statement of all:

"it would ruin the cpap machine" !!!

LOL!!

Glad to hear you stood your ground.
