Years ago, we had an entire cherry tomato plant stripped by little green worms, but we hesitated at pulling it.
Wouldn't ya know, that sucker releafed itself and produced a ton of sweet cherry tomatoes.
If it's grown with pesticides, they're IN the tomato and can't be washed off. If I can't manage to sow my own without pesticides, I'll just buy 'em. They're less expensive now than they used to be. *shrug*

I'd never seen them before last summer. I instinctively picked 'em off the plants and threw them, but I guess I should've let them keep eating. The plants were already devastated, so they couldn't have done much more harm at that point. *shrug*

With some bugs, you can plant eggplant nearby, which those bugs prefer.
Sacrificial eggplant--too bad if you love eggplant.

It's the same treasure hunt but I get to just stick my hands down in the straw or gently use a very small 3 prong hoe thingy to find them.
I actually got 2 plantings of potatoes done last year...so 2 crops of new potatoes. I was giving those suckers away. It's a good thing we like potatoes.
With the straw the weeding is minimal to none and what little there is to do is super easy with the loose straw. Much easier on the old back too.
Two crops is awesome. The potatoes I got were smaller than average, but they sure were yummy. The sweet potatoes were also smaller (but also tasty). And the greenery from both was beautiful (and also edible!). I had good luck with sugar snap peas, mixed lettuce, chives, celery and herbs. I also planted popcorn (which is not your average field corn/corn on the cob); when the stalks were pretty high, I discovered two kids on the 4th of July (about 10-12 years old) trying to steal the cobs (probably attending a BBQ nearby and figured they'd add some corn to the party). They weren't able to tug the cobs off the plant (it was too early for harvesting), but they ruined a few of 'em. (I did wonder what they'd tell the grown-ups at the BBQ when asked where the corn came from. ) Little did they know it was actually popcorn and not sweet corn.

I love the idea of the straw.

Oh, and I think that three-pronged gardening thingamajig is called a trowel.

That's good to know. I like eggplant well enough, but I wouldn't say I'm a "fan," so if sacrifices must be made, well...

Take note in the article that it was the reason the big, tall chain link fence was built at this school. (the one DeVos was thinking of)

However, there may be a higher probability of these predators posing a problem.

You told me recently (in the other thread, after I cited politifact) that the site is biased and not reliable. IIRC, you even called it "fake news." Yet, you're linking to them here? (And the pertinent ending to that article reads: "We rate DeVos’ claim False.")

Gah, I need to take some Dramamine...

I listed that link to demonstrate how the left can twist the information. Everybody seemed to be having a big laugh about the subject of grizzly bears and how ridiculous it would be to have a firearm for protection in some circumstances.

At least they DID put in this line to substantiate the potential of predatory animals and the need to protect the kids.

"The elementary school in Wapiti certainly faces the threat of grizzly bears, given its proximity to Yellowstone National Park. It has a fence surrounding the playground to keep bears out."

The whole discombobulation of the statement she made had it's origin in something one of my senators ( Enzi ) told her.
I would suppose that under the stress of being interrogated by liberal loonie senators, that situation came to her mind and out her mouth. Sort of a deer-in-the-headlights moment. Been there, done that.

So Den... do I take this to mean that "liberal loonie senators" also cause alternate facts to jump out of DT's mouth for the same reason?

Oh, I get it now, thanks. Politifact is not a site that you give any credence to, but it IS accurate to show how twisted the left can be. Gotcha. So it's just propaganda and "fake news" (like Breitbart).

I don't think anyone questions the viability of an attack by a grizzly bear in certain areas, but wouldn't you agree that a fence would be a preferred solution over keeping a gun nearby? Aren't enough people killed by toddlers who get their hands on guns already? https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... ica-deaths

Now I suppose you'll tell me that The Guardian is also biased against the right...

Betsy DeVos bought her position, plain and simple. She's in no way qualified, but her campaign donation $$$ spoke volumes.

Alternative/alternate facts.
Let's see........
Is that like if two (or more) people witness an automobile accident (or other event) and see different things?
To each person, they saw what they saw. Each believes THEIR recollections are THEIR "facts". To each what they saw are FACTUAL and REAL. And, they may testify in court accordingly........."This is the way I saw it."

Now, some have tried to stretch it out to "lying". If you want to go down that road, here are some examples.
And, since SOME people like Politifact and/or trust them, we'll use them (and another liberal site) for some of these lists of "alternative facts".

Obama's "alternative reality":

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fac ... ebf0710ed5

http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/201297/ ... -tim-brown

Hillary's "alternative reality":

Thanks for your good suggestions (and for NOT telling me that my anxiety is self-induced).

I've been trying some things (like yoga and a weekly art class) to relax; they're helpful, but they haven't put an end to my sleep issues (yet, anyway). I've also done the gardening thing (nice to know I can grow my own organic super-fresh veggies) but not recently, as it's winter, and I'm at a high enough elevation that we get snow here).

Last time I grew tomatoes, I was dismayed to find that my plants were devoured overnight by big fat tomato worms:

I'll try again when spring arrives.

Instead of spray, just pull them off the plants and kill them. Also there is a wasp that's their cure. they lay eggs in the larva and kill them by feeding on them.

Be careful on (like yoga and a weekly art class), it has been known to turn good people inti Liberals.

If you grow your own plants. you can get a head start by growing them inside in pots, then ween them into the ground as temp permits. Here birds like to cut the plant stems, so plant more seeds than you need. Enjoy the fresh produce. Jim

That is not correct. Pyrethin is the approved insecticide for traditional and organic tomatoes. In order to be IN tomatoes, pyrethin would have to be absorbed through the roots. It will not absorb through the roots.

Pyrethin is approved for application up to the day before harvest. It is easily rinsed off tomatoes.

Tomatoes are one of our favorite garden crops. We check them for hornworms daily and just pick off any.

No argument... I agree with you on this.

The bottom line then is that you (and others) will believe your facts, and I will (and others) believe what I consider to be my facts... and we'll still be forum buddies. If you agree, just say AMEN!
