Simplus vs Airfit F20...A Newbies Opinion

Post by bigdave36 » Fri Jan 13, 2017 12:04 pm

I started Apap 2 months ago. I was fitted with a Simplus at the DME and decided to give it a good try to get used to it. It went ok except I would lose the seal when I would flop around, which I frequently do. I was also fiddlin around with the straps to try and get better seal. All this was also driving my wife crazy. I decided to purchase an F20 after reading some reviews. I went through our sponsor and received it last Friday, 01/07/2017. It took me a coupla nights to adjust to it,but it is now going well, and the leaks are gone.
And now for the promised comparison.

Headgear: I find the Headgear on the F20 to be less restrictive. It could be that I had the Simplus gear to tight in an attempt to stop the leaks. I thought I would really like the magnetic strap clip on the F20, but i prefer the the clips on the Simplus. Just a bit easier to find the attachment point. I have strap marks from the F20 which I didn't have on the Simplus.

Cushion:I like the cushion much better on the F20. It seems softer and makes more contact on my face I think. The lower part that goes on my chin, on the F20, took a bit to get used to as it moved around more, it seems kinda floppy when I move my chin, although I never lose the seal.

Frame: Again I prefer the F20. The best part is losing the forehead piece. It may have been mental, but it gave me a headache. The exhaust ports don't bother me on either mask. The Simplus has an additional axis on the hose connection, but I don't miss it. The F20 a quick connect so you can take off the hose withoutb removing the hose itself from the frame. I seldom get up in the middle of the night so this feature is irrelevant in my case. Again I prefer the Simplus clips to the F20s magnets. The cushion seems to detach easier on the F20 when removing the mask in the morning which is just mildly annoying to me.

Summary: The F20 is the better mask for me. Not having the forehead piece is really nice. I no longer have to mess with the straps and the seal is awesome. My wife is no longer crabby,( Well, not about this anyway ).

Elbow attachment: Simplus I believe wins, being a "ball" going in all directions, as opposed to just rotating

Exhaust holes: Simplus I believe wins, as the air goes out upwards, whereas Resmed has decided to have the air leaving around the hose elbow, and it can be felt much more.

Cost: Simplus is significantly cheaper

Marks: some people are reporting marks left on the nose bridge, with the FP20, maybe because of the double-walled cushion

I tried the Simplus at my DME and could not get a good seal - it just didn't seat on my face very well. I bought an F-20 to replace my Mirage FX. I find that it seals very well. I wake up momentarily once every few nights to swivel the elbow, but I quickly fall back to sleep and probably do often do it without waking.

I tried the F20 for a few nights before returning it. It didn't leak for me but it was uncomfortable - I tried both medium and large cushions and the top of my nose was hurting a lot, and the top part of the cushion kept sliding around on my face when laying down. I also found the diffuser to be loud, but I am using pretty high bi-level pressures so I can't complain much regarding that.

I was told that the mask will accommodate any size cushion(?)...i.e. if you have a M and want to try a L you don't have to get a different mask, just a different cushion.

Thanks for the review. The F20 is on my short list of masks to try out.

I would think that is correct, the mask frame and headgear isn't any different as far as I know. Just like with the Simplus, you pop off the cushion and you can replace it with another. Using the F20 fit guide, the Medium cushion should fit my face well -- unfortunately the problems I described persisted. And also the mask severely limited the positions I could lay down in and fall asleep.
