Fitting problems

Post by lorib64 » Mon Jan 09, 2017 2:27 pm

I am having trouble adjusting the mask. I don't know how to keep the air flowing properly. I am having more events/hr than I did in the lab. At 14 they had them reduced to none from 24 without, but now they are running from about 8-12/hr even after it has been increased to 15. I don't think the pressure setting is the issue, though, I don't think I am getting the pressure through the mask.

I turned the ramp off, because it felt like it would pull too much when it eventually turned fully on. Is the ramp helpful?

I loosen the straps to get some air flow and then it starts leaking and i don't know what I am doing.

I have been trying to used this thing for over 2 months, maybe 3. It is so uncomfortable, I keep playing with the straps trying to get it right, that I take it off. I am not getting a minimum of 4 hours on a regular basis.

I like the myAir feedback. I like when it tells me if I have been wearing it enough.

I just saw the doctor for the first time in the end of Dec. I don't know if I should call the place I got the machine-they showed me how to set it up in Oct- and see if they can go over wearing it, in person. Can the mask be the wrong size? He gave me a medium. No measuring.

I have read things and watched videos-maybe I should get my husband to help? I am pretty clumsy/awkward.

Where do I start?

I don't know what you mean by keep the air flowing properly. When you have the mask sealed it maintains a pressure but really doesn't blow except for what is vented.
When you are awaking frequently you can have events reported where you are holding your breath tossing and turning. The machine doesn't know that you are awake and these are not real events.
You have a disadvantage in knowing what events you are having if you have the Airsense 10 CPAP, instead of the ELITE or AUTOSET. Because the AHI is not broken down into categories of events or when they are occurring.

Are you falling to sleep or laying there awake for a long time. If you are able to go to sleep without the ramp that's ok, but if not, since your pressure is at 15cm it may be helpful to start it around 7 or 8cm for 15 to 30 mins. You have to see if it is something you need to help you get used to sleeping with the machine.

It's not really like a fan. You're just breathing with a small amount of pressure applied to the airways.

It may be time to try a different mask. Check out CPAP.com they have some masks with free return insurance. That way you can try one and if it doesn't work for you just be sure and return it within the time limit. Can you breathe through your nose and have you tried nasal masks or nasal pillows?

Here is a sizing guide that you can print out. Make sure the ruler is to size or you might have to resize it.
It will give you an idea if you need a different cushion size. https://www.respshop.com/manuals/Simplus-respshop.pdf

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. Your answers bring me back to a question I have had. What is wearing the Cpap properly supposed to feel like? I get suction or leaks. Air blowing from the vent into my eyes. Sometimes it does feel like a fan.

I am sure I am wearing it properly sometimes, but I don't recognize it.

I fall asleep pretty quickly, but I set the ramp for 10 minutes and that worked okay.

I don't think I can just breathe through my nose. I struggle at the dentist. I have not tried any other mask.

Some mask venting can feel like a fan. Especially if it is bouncing off the bedding onto you. Maybe check out masks that vent further away from your eyes or wear an eye sleep mask to keep the air away from your eyes.
Some masks have diffused venting so it doesn't feel like a fan. The nasal pillow mask I wear has very gentle venting.

Try just breathing through your nose during the day and see.

oh wow, thank you so much

I am able to breathe through my nose when I am not congested, but i have to concentrate. I don't know how I would control that at night.
