Sleep hour result incorrect
Hi All,
Last night was my first night of a CPAP trial. I'm not sure of the specs of the machine, it's black with a humidifier, and has ResMed on it. I got only basic instructions from the technician (fill it up, plug it in, put this on your face, we'll review the data in a week). I was told to use it for at least 4 hours a night, more if I could.
I went to bed at about 9.30pm. After initially struggling to fall asleep (as expected), and getting up to use the bathroom a couple times I fell asleep (I'm guessing by 11pm) and slept through to 5.30am. I got up, went to the bathroom, came back and dozed until 6am without the mask. At this time I got up, pressed the home button expecting to see about 6 hours of usage. It only said 1.5!!! The other two displays were humidifier and something else (mask maybe?) and they both had smiley faces.
Now, I'm the kind of person who likes to comply and get the gold stars, so I'm a little bit crushed that after wearing it all night, trying so hard to be positive, I find that the reading is wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?
If not, I'll try again tonight and see what happens. If I have the same issue I'll give the trial center a call or go in and see them.

Sounds like you have an Airsense 10 Autoset. Does it say Autoset on the front. The recording time runs from 12 noon to 12 noon usually. If the clock is not set right it might have recorded part in one day and part the next day. If it is an Autoset here is a link to the clinical manual that shows you how to access the clinical menu and check the date and time. https://sleep.tnet.com/home/files/resme ... -guide.pdf

Which would put the machine about 8 time zones fast, by my reckoning. And if I'm not wrong, that corresponds to Pacific Standard Time (California), which is the default time zone for new ResMed machines. So +1 to OkyDokyOkyDoky wrote: If the clock is not set right it might have recorded part in one day and part the next day
But don't change the clock, because you might lose data. They'll figure it out when you return the machine.

Good catch (if that's really the problem)! Assuming that you're correct, this person is in the clear, as (s)he will show compliance after the first day (even if it's taking some of the hours from on night and the rest from another). I noticed the same thing when I went to a very different time zone (even though I thought that I had fixed the clock correctly).OkyDoky wrote:Sounds like you have an Airsense 10 Autoset. My DME explained to me that they only look at number of hours to prove compliance, not which hours of the day you slept.

Thanks for the replies!
I've checked the machine and it's an AirSense 10 Autoset.
My husband called the centre and they said that sometimes when using the 'auto on' it then switches itself on and off through the night.... a bit disappointing to hear after a difficult night, thinking I was at least doing something good for my health! I am hopeful it is the time issue, either way i'll see what happens tonight. If it has the same 1.5 hours when I wake up at 6am tomorrow morning, I'll know it's the time zone issue!

Hi All,
So curiosity got the better of me and I used the instructions to get into the clinical menu. Unfortunately there was no time zone error, just a recording of only a couple hours! Frustrating to say the least. Hopefully it goes better tonight!

Needless Worry about whether you're in compliance with the CPAP machine, messing with settings, etc. Why don't you just wait to see your Sleep Doctor or the medical equipment provider and they will examine your computer chip in the CPAP machine to determine if you're in compliance.

Re: Sleep hour result incorrect
I hope one of our more experienced CPAP users will respond about the auto-on issue. I am a relative newbie, just about 6 mos in so far, but that doesn't sound right to me about the machine turning itself on and off during the night due to being set to "auto-on".

Re: Sleep hour result incorrect
Auto-On is when the cpap detects breathing it will turn ON. This can be affected by a mask leak.sleepychar wrote:that doesn't sound right to me about the machine turning itself on and off during the night due to being set to "auto-on".
afaik - the Auto- OFF feature is also affected by mask leaks but rather large mask leaks and it takes a FULL minute of a LARGE Leak before the cpap shuts off. Some use this so when they go to the bathroom the cpap will shut off by automatically.
If the OP thinks she is having masks leaks it is wise to turn off Auto OFF. afaik the Auto ON should still work.
Re: Sleep hour result incorrect
The other factor is the international dateline which may be causing some confusion. AND The cpap doesn't calculate days like we do from mid-nite to mid-nite but from noon to noon. To confuse things more it uses Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
It may be best to check total hours used until this gets sorted out.

Re: Sleep hour result incorrect
If you suspect that it's an issue with auto-on/auto-off (or just want to rule it out), most machines that have this also allow you to disable it. In fact, some allow for separate disabling of auto-off and auto-on. Try disabling the auto-off (or both) and see if that fixes the problem.

Re: Sleep hour result incorrect
Thanks all. The good news is that I got a full 8.5 hour reading from last night, with an AHI score of 1.5, and smiley faces against humidifier and mask leaks. The even better news is i fell asleep pretty easily and slept through the night.
If it happens again I'll look at switching the auto-off setting off

Great news. It sounds like you are off to a good start. When you get your machine, make sure it's full data capable and download Sleepyhead to monitor your therapy. https://sleep.tnet.com/resources/sleepyhead
