C-Pap Easy Clean? UVC - (not Soclean ozone method)

Post by TANSTAF1 » Fri Dec 23, 2016 12:40 pm

I have read the mostly negative comments and equipment/silicone damage warnings about the SoClean CPAP cleaner that uses ozone to kill germs.

So I went looking for other methods. I knew there were ultraviolet light methods used to kill germs in dirty water to make them potable. Seemingly this method would not damage silicone or other seals or parts.

I found this one:

http://www.c-papeasyclean.com/

it's kinda pricey, but Amazon and others sells just UVC lamp bulbs, It seems a trivial matter to mount those in a fluorescent light fixture over a plastic storage bin in which to place the CPAP parts. This would be significantly cheaper.

Using this light methods is a mite of a hassle as the equipment needs to be turned over so the light can then falls on the opposite side. And I suspect there are internal parts of the CPAP machine that would not be reached by light (even light bouncing off sides. But seemingly other than the hose the internal parts are not reached by SoClean ozone method either if the reviewer observations are correct as to how it works. I do wonder if sufficient UVC light would penetrate a hose, but I would not mind cleaning that separately as that is a trivial exercise.

Does anyone have any experience with or comments about the C-Pap Easy Clean?

You have been using CPAP for 10 years...why do you think you need this now? Why would you want to clean the internal parts of the CPAP?

Direct UV-C light will damage your eyes. Fixture must be shielded from exposure.

I was tired and weary of cleaning my equipment and heard the ads for cleaners and decided to see if they were an easier, safer method. The prior method (and perhaps frequency) was not adequate or perhaps I didn't thoroughly rinse the parts so I got a lingering respiratory illness. I don't need that again.

As for safer, I suppose it will make it more complicated to build if I have to arrange a switch to turn it off before the lid is raised/removed.

Most of us just don't see the need for such a device or lots of cleaning. All that passes through the cpap machine and equipment is the very same air in the room that you and everyone breathes without issues all day long.

The air passes through a filter as it enters the machine. There is no way for it to get dirty. Now, the mask parts that contact our skin can pick up greases and oils from our skin but these are easily washed off with a little soap and water.

The bottom line is that the cpap supplies air to you that is even cleaner than the air you breathe at home when not using the cpap. Very little cleaning is actually needed. Many of us have NEVER cleaned our hoses. I rinse my nasal cushions under water and rub them with my fingers and that's all the cleaning that they seem to need.

I don't know why some people are so compelled to excessively clean their cpap setup. But these companies making aftermarket cpap cleaning systems are just feeding into an irrational fear to make money. Just remember that the air coming out of your cpap is the same air you breathe all the time at home passed though one or two additional filters.

If your immune sytem is insufficient, perhaps you should consult a specialist.
Infection from cpap equipment is greatly exaggerated for profit--otherwise nearly non-existent.
