I forgot the water

Post by owleyes » Mon Nov 07, 2016 2:34 pm

I've been using CPAP for over a year now. I check the Sleep Mapper app daily for my AHI number. In the beginning, I decided to go with the highest moisture setting and a heated tube. In about 16 months, my AHI has gone from an average of between 5 and 10, to recently, more like 2.8 and 4. But still going up to 6 or 7 every week or two.

Well, last night, I forgot to add water to the chamber and as it turns out, I scored a 2. About my best yet. Is it just a fluke, or shouldn't I be running the moisture so high? I wake up about twice a night, desperately thirsty. And I'm always parched in the morning, so I figured I needed the high moisture setting.

Also, I have a pretty high pressure (15-20) and usually sleep with my mouth open. I can rarely fall asleep with my mouth closed. So I guess that's why I'm thirsty.

Any suggestions about my moisture settings?

Thanks,
Steve

Experiment with all humidity settings, go from dry tank to maximum humidity. Record the results in a journal, then review. Good luck.

I have the same problem that you have and it has taken me two years to find the cure (for me)

I use a boil and bite snore stopper mouth guard and a 4 In cervical collar to keep my mouth shut.
I have been able to drop the pressure for 15 to 20 ... down to 10 to 12 and never have a dry mouth and my ahi is below 1 consistently.

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

+1

I also have used one successfully for a few years. The firm foam is my preference - https://www.walmart.com/search/?query=D ... %20Collars

When you heat it in hot water ... it softens and you put it in your mouth and gently bit .... with your lower jaw in the position you want it in .... I have mine set with the front teeth even which is forward from a normal closed mouth position (like you are going to bite off something) , then hold that position till it cools.

With it set to that position it is very comfortable to use it all night.

Boil and bite only works with the mouth thingie.
The cervical collar would get all soggy.

Thank you.

I don't need help at night, but sometimes I take a brief nap sitting almost straight up. I don't like to use the cervical collar when sitting up, so I may get the mouthpiece.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the neck support and mouthpiece, and look forward to trying them out.

If you are talking about the cervical collar, the 4-inch firm foam is my preference - https://www.walmart.com/search/?query=D ... %20Collars

The wider size in firm does a better job of keeping my jaw from dropping. I'm a small person and still use the 4-inch width. It feels strange when I put it on, but once I lie down in bed, I hardly notice it is there.

I have used one successfully for a few years and won't do without it.

BTW, I order through the Walmart website and they ship free to the store and send an email when it arrives. I'm buying groceries there every week and just pick it up on one of my trips.

I am going to get one of these and try it out. Are you able to sleep on your stomach with your head turned to the side? Or are you stuck on your side?

I have been taping my mouth shut for about a week, which has helped my leaks.
