difficult to breath after taking off mask

Post by frtwome » Thu Oct 06, 2016 2:57 pm

My husband uses his cpap machine every night, he usually sleeps good about 7 hours with the mask on, But as soon as he takes off the mask and gets out of bed, he has a terrible time breathing, He coughs a lot and cannot get his breath, this has been happening for about a month now, his breathing improves slightly a couple hours later, but still not like it should be. He does have a humidifier on the machine, it is set on 1, I am just asking to see if someone else here has this problem, and what we can do? Maybe settings on his machine is causing this?

I am using a similar mask and have been on CPAP machine for 5 years but I don't have such issues when I remove my mask in the morning and get up. If I had any accumulation in my throat, trachea, or lungs as you describe then I would gurgle and get rid of it right away. When was his last chest X-rays?

I would suggest a follow up with his primary care physician for evaluation.
What you are describing isn't a known common symptom secondary to cpap use.

I had similar problems, and to my surprise, was diagnosed with asthma.

I agree that you should see your primary care doctor. This doesn't sound like it's from CPAP, though it does sound like CPAP is "turning off" the symptoms while it is in use.

In the meanwhile, try the following:
• Turn the humidifier as high as it can go without causing "rainout."
• Make sure he's sitting up (or even standing up) before he takes the mask off. He may even want to wait a few minutes before removing it.
• Do not power the machine off until after the mask is completely removed from his face.

DH - someone is going to sue (or prosecute) you for practicing medicine without a license! You have NO idea what you're talking about and are going to cause someone to be sick or worse! Stop spouting whatever shit comes into your head! Just stop it!

And to the OP - pay NO attention to what he said!

Try elevating the head of the bed to see if that helps. If it does then he probably has developed silent acid reflux or GERD.
What happens at night is that stomach acid creeps up towards the throat. The body protects it self by the formation of mucus. This is fine until you stand up and choke. By titling the bed the acid can't creepy up against gravity as easily. The other solution is a wedge but it doesn't work as well.

It needs to be dealt with as it can trigger asthma, damage lungs and vocal chords as well as a possibility of cancer of the esophagus.

Sorry your husband having a hard time. Please go see your Dr, it took a biopsy to figure out why I coughed and couldn't breath when I woke up. The sooner the better for your doctor...please.

If he recently started taking new bloop pressure medication please also check this. Some can cause throat irritation and cause coughing and then you can spend over a year doing tests for asthma and other lung problems before someone asks about your meds.

D.H., there are threads on the Internet under:

Coughing and phlegm from CPAP machine?

and

I have been using the machine for about a month now and I am finding that I have a constant cough and phlegm.

Possible cause:

This problem is common in sleep apnea patients using CPAP therapy. Your nasal passages must get used to this pressured air hitting it.

Hey Donald,

You should be preparing for your next debate with Hillary, not throwing your hatred and nastiness in this direction!
