15 plus years of cpap, and I've used tap water when I travel, and distilled at home. I clean the tank when a)it smells funky when I put on the mask, or b) the bottom feels slimy or rough. Tap water does cause mineral buildup and needs cleaning with soap, water, and rubbing, while distilled mostly stays fine for a long time. I top up the distilled each nite, and clean the tank once every week or two. Never have I seen any slime or bacterial contamination. Mostly just mineral buildup. You are breathing water vapor from the humidifier, not water droplets, so I don't think it much matters as long as the water is not contaminated with some volatile chemicals (don't mix gasoline with the water!)

Maybe I'm not very OCD, but never had any issues. That being said, if you feel better washing the tank nightly, and filling it up fresh each day, go for it! It's a personal preference, and you should do what makes you feel good.

while i don't disagree with what you are saying to see this stuff you do have to examine very closely unless it has been overly neglected.
most sinks or toilet will also have this slightly pink slime if you look up under the rim where no one ever looks

I try not to pee or poo in my cpap tank!

You don't get it - the air that goes into the blower does not go into the tank!

That's news to me

The time you have the tank open to do that can introduce trouble you otherwise would not have had.

Have you considered a house cleaning service

I fill my machine with new distilled water every night and empty it out in the morning. I never need to do any cleaning of the tank or hose. They both look and smell like new. I hang the hose up with both ends down so it can drip/dry out in case of any moisture in it. I've been doing this for 1-2 years. A gallon of water lasts 7-10 days for me.
