Autopap for nasal congestion

Post by garyland » Thu Sep 15, 2016 8:57 am

For 11 years now I have been having sleep issues because of nasal congestion. I can't use a full face mask. If I switch to an AUTOPAP will that help "blast" through my congestion and allow me to sleep better?

I don't think it will make any difference. No pressure is strong enough to "blast" through your congestion. Use a nasal wash before bed and train yourself to use a full face mask.

+1

I would think humidity settings would do more for congestion than switching to an auto. An auto doesn't "blast" pressure any more than a straight pap does.

ETA: I'd also think any "blast" of pressure strong enough to push through congested nasal passages is likely to just wake you up and annoy you if you aren't used to that kind of pressure.

Hi Garyland,

What have you tried regarding alleviating your nasal congestion?

Regarding whether an autopap would blast through your congestion, I have no idea. I know when I have wakened in the middle of the night with severe congestion that I can't seem to alleviate, I will slightly raise the pressure on my machine since it isn't an auto. It seems to somewhat help but to be honest, I wouldn't want to run what I feel is an artificially high pressure all night.

Are you due for a new machine? If you are, it might be worth looking into even if it doesn't help your nasal congestion.

It has been my experience that greater humidity relieves my sinus congestion. Seems counter intuitive but it is the case. Try upping your humidity and maybe even lowering your temperature a degree or two.

Just my thoughts...

Some people have reflex congestion as soon as they put on a mask which applies pressure to the upper part of the nose.
I am one of those people. I wear a nasal pillow mask to avoid the problem.

Your Iconny profile data is incomplete, you don't list your XPAP, also not many people will waste their time, playing with Iconny mod, text helps.

You need to use the software for your machine, to get a better picture of your treatment. I have found with your treatment correct, you have less congestion, I breath better in bed than I do in the daytime. Jim

There is a microcosm of truth to the CPAP clearing sinuses. But not blasting! I wear the nasal pillows. If i am having nasal congestion the pressure will help open the passages over time, 10's of minutes. I need to be patient. I need to roll from side to side to help the passages drain. I need to breath through my mouth a bit until one of the nostrils clear. Usually when congestion hits, I'm better off hopping in the shower, blowing my nose, then masking up.

But definitely not laser ""Pew - Pew - Pew" blasting.

maybe if you switch to an iVAPS or AVAPS... they go up to 30cm.

decongestants are easier

I seriously doubt that'll make any difference. It didn't blast through mine for sure...too bad you can't wear the ffm.
Dealing with the congestion in other ways could work better. If you're a long time sufferer I bet you've tried every remedy from netypots to pseudo. My only question would be if you've gotten checked for a deviated septum

I've experienced the same issue of sinus congestion pre and during (166 days) PAP therapy. Used steroids, Flonase, raised the head of the bed, humidification, no humidification, to no avail. Afrin WAS my sinus friend but we all know the pitfall of using a decongestant. Went to a second ENT to address my sinus congestion (the first seemed to be an ear guy), put the nasal camera up my nose and found I have a deviated septum. Septoplasty is set for late October. Even though surgery is involved, what a relief to find out a solution to my problem. If you have not seen an ENT, you might consider it.
