At sleeep study, were you hoping you had apnea?
Re: At sleeep study, were you hoping you had apnea?
Why would anyone "hope" they had Apnea? When I had a stress test I didn't hope I had a heart condition.

When I had my stress test I was hoping I would survive to see the results.LSAT wrote:Why would anyone "hope" they had Apnea? When I had a stress test I didn't hope I had a heart condition.
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.
Re: At sleeep study, were you hoping you had apnea?
When I had OSA, I hoped I could get a sleep study.Re: At sleeep study, were you hoping you had apnea?
Once I was diagnosed, I hoped I could have a machine.
Once I had a machine, I hoped to use it to get rid of the OSA.
My numbers prove that as long as I use the machine, I don't have OSA.
Now I hope other people get diagnosed, get a machine, and get over OSA, as I have.

Easy, because they have been checked negative for everything else and need some damn relief.LSAT wrote:Why would anyone "hope" they had Apnea?

Such a relief that it is something TREATABLE, and does not require dramatic lifestyle changes.LSAT wrote:Why would anyone "hope" they had Apnea?
I look around and see people who might have it, but don't know, and it affects their lives.
Apnea can be part of a snowball that will destroy ones health.

I was completely surprised. I went in to be checked for Periodic Leg Movement and to see if that was causing problems. My wife was getting annoyed because it was every 30 seconds like clockwork.cdestuck wrote:Then I started wondering, are others like me in hoping to have apnea and be scripted a machine to have some relief? Never thought I would want to bad to be tied to a machine at night but have my feeling changed. Come on ResMed
I went to sleep in the study and they put a mask on me half way through. Turned out the PLM only lasted a short time and didn't effect my sleep. The apnea they found caused large desats in SpO2.
After using CPAP it's improved things but sometimes it feel like one step forward 1 1/2 steps back. Overall better on most mornings, at least the headaches are gone except after a bad night. Still plugging away at it an trying things out.

After my motorcycle accident, when I looked at my chest scan in the OR (isn't technology wonderful ....) I hoped it was lymphoma not lung cancer. Fortunately the technician in the room was correct in his "diagnosis" - he'd seen a lot of scans in his time and that didn't look like lung to him. Unfortunately it took two long sessions with the doc sticking long needles into my chest to prove him right.
"Don't worry, if I puncture a lung - which doesn't happen very often - we know how to deal with that and you won't die. You're in a hospital after all." (or words to that effect)

Tumors in Hodgkin's lymphoma contain very few cancer cells! (hence the diagnostic difficulty - unlike OSA)
At least the diagnosis process is relatively non-invasive and straightforward for OSA candidates.

Not uncommon - hoping medical tests are positive
It's not uncommon that people being testing for a medical condition want the test to show they have it. This way, their symptoms are accounted for, treatment is forthcoming, and relief is on the horizon. This is by no means limited to Sleep Apnea!

Re: At sleeep study, were you hoping you had apnea?
Yes, I was. For one thing, I had pushed my doctor for the sleep study, because of my excessive daytime sleepiness and light snoring at night. I also became aware of how expensive they are (I have insurance, but still had to pay $300), and I didn't want anyone to think that I was a hypochondriac and had this expensive test for nothing. So for my pride, and wanting to be right, I wanted it to be sleep apnea. And of course, also because then I could get some treatment and maybe stop being sleepy all the time, which would be huge.
My sleep study was less than two weeks ago. I got the results yesterday, and it is mild-moderate OSA (14x per hour apneas) and Dr. is prescribing CPAP. For a short while, I was happy (I was right! I knew I had OSA!). Then I surprised myself by wishing that it had not been OSA. The reality of the challenges of the CPAP system, wearing a mask the rest of my life, etc. hit me. It's pretty intimidating. My insurance won't pay for another sleep study to determine the correct pressure, so I am going to do it at home, (after I get fitted). I don't understand a lot of it, and there is this 30 day pressure to get the mask right. I really wish right now that it had not been OSA and instead been sleep hygiene issues or the like. But I am just starting this journey. If the CPAP works, and I start feeling alive again, it will be worth it.
Good question.
