At sleeep study, were you hoping you had apnea?

Post by cdestuck » Wed Aug 31, 2016 7:31 pm

So I'm do to have my sleep study done on the 12th of Sept. For a number of years, I have fought sleep during the day if I wasn't doing something strenuous. If I get up and the morning and get to it, I'm ok unless I slow down and like sit around are like. I fact I was at the dentist last week having a tooth ground down for a crown and I fell to sleep twice. I get VERY sleepy riding my motorcycle and have to gobble down the 5 Hour energy drinks to get any help at all.

I take gabapentin and Cymbalta for foot neuropathy and just blamed my tiredness on the meds. But just recently a riding but was diagnosed, began using a CPAP and feels tons better. So I was told of the Epworth Sleep test which I took and I blow it away with a super high score. So I'm thinking perhaps I do have apnea and just saw a sleep doc this week. And let me tell you, I'm hoping 100% to the max that I am determined to have apnea. Boy I'm praying to have it and then my tiredness will or can be helped with a cpap.

Then I started wondering, are others like me in hoping to have apnea and be scripted a machine to have some relief? Never thought I would want to bad to be tied to a machine at night but have my feeling changed. Come on ResMed

I didn't hope, but I had a pretty good idea.

I was only hoping for a CPAP machine ASAP at the time of the sleep study. I already knew I was having OSA events.

I wish you well with your study. I will have to say it is good to hear you have something wrong when you know you're experiencing problems- I had that experience with a different health problem once.

I believe most people have sleep apnea to some degree of light or heavy. A light sleep apnea person might/might not need to use a cpap machine but it will sure helps himself in the long run if he can put up with it. Lacking of oxygen during sleep might not kill you instantly but will affect your health in the long run.

I had NO idea what apnea was when I had my sleep study. I just thought that I was dying.

After I was diagnosed I was shocked to hear all the people around me who have it and never bothered to say anything about it.

I had known for many years that I had sleep apnea. Loud snoring, obvious snorting and gasping, etc.. I didn't understand what that really meant (oxygen deprivation, not just sleep deprivation), so I ignored it for years. I had no idea how many of my symptoms were caused by sleep apnea and not just getting older. Then I saw a news report that sleep apnea led to high blood pressure (which I had), and that led to heart attacks and stroke (which my doctor was warning me about at the age of 38). I confessed to my doctor that i had sleep apnea and asked for a sleep study.

My only hope was that the sleep study would go better than I had dreaded for years. (I don't sleep well in hotels, and I am a severe night owl). The sleep study went well. I had a split study, was graded severe in under 3 hours and moved onto the titration. Best 5+ hours of sleep in years, possibly decades.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

My sleep study was recommended by my GI doc when my oxygen saturation dropped below 70% during a routine colonoscopy. So I wasn't all that surprised when the somnography results came through.

I had thought for years I had OSA, and multiple doctors believed the same, but we couldn't get it diagnosed due to interference from leg movements during the studies that didn't let me sleep enough for the apnea to manifest. But yes, I was eager for a diagnosis, something that could be treated and improve my life. I felt relieved to finally have confirmation that I wasn't just lazy, unmotivated, absent minded, and absolutely no fun. Once my treatment was tweaked and became effective, I began to see a turnaround in those issues.

I felt great and had no idea I had OSA. I thought the sleep study was a waste of time and was shocked to get the result.

Yet I've experienced nothing but good things from CPAP use.

Some are asymptomatic (or should I say think we are!). Maybe those are the unlucky ones because diagnosis can be delayed?

I didn't even know what sleep apnea was when I had my study -- my PCP doc just told me to go see this other doc and I went.

I was so brain dead that it never even occurred to me to ask anyone.
But I found this forum and got all fixed up.

I've heard that in North Korea they use anti-aircraft guns to cure sleep apnea instead of sleep studies ... so probably not something to hope for.

The diagnosis was a relief, because all I really needed was SLEEP.

I had no idea what sleep apnea was. But I was having all kinds of symptoms, faintness, tired, worn out, no memory etc. .. My husband said tell the Dr you snore. (because it was keeping HIM awake). My PCP ordered an at home test. Surprise- Sleep apnea diagnosis.
The Day I got my machine, we left for a long trip. So my brand new machine got packed up, we hit the road, and everything worked out great.
Now, I can't believe how much better I feel.
I thought I was just getting older, (58), and I was just going downhill. Boy was I wrong. That machine has made all those bad symptoms go away. My heart doesn't do that "thud" extra beat and wake me up anymore. My Cardiologist is happy about that. My Cardio Dr even has a warning signs poster for sleep apnea in his exam rooms.

I have not missed a single night in almost 2 years. And I plan to keep using it.
You don't know how bad you really feel, until you get to feeling better because of the cpap machine.
