going on cross country trip, need to plug into cig lighter

So my husband wants to drive from Missouri to California and sleep in our truck. So I either find a way to run my cpap machine in the truck, get up enough money for motel rooms or stay home and I DON'T want to stay home.
Does anyone have any idea what I need to buy in order to make this trip happen? I've searched ebay but I'm not real sure what I'm looking for. lol
Also what do you all do when your power goes out at night which has happened to me a few times. What, if any, kind of battery backup do you have?

Running from a car battery is never a good idea. The battery is designed for a short burst to start the car, followed by a complete recharge. Deep discharges can lower the voltage to the point where starting is iffy. This of course is worse if the battery is old, or small, or the car is hard to start. In general its much better to get a second DEEP CYCLE battery, charge it from the car while driving and then use it to power the CPAP. This will cost $65 to $100 for a basic setup.

The devil is in the details - I think an S8 needs an inverter - hopefully others here will know. The power use depends on the pressure. If you need the humidifier, the power use goes way up and makes it much worse to use the car battery. So if you can add some information, it would help.

I believe the S8 requires pure sine wave AC.
Resmed machines are a nightmare for off-grid power.
I would suggest a newer machine, another make, even a used unit
DeVillBiss Intellipaps will run directly off 12V DC; so will Respironics.
You still need a deep cycle battery.

according to the resmed battery guide the s8 can run on a modified sine way inverter without the humidifier, but needs pure sine wave with the inverter.

there's also a 12v converter, (though it's somewhat pricey) available from cpap.com and likely other places, to enable it to run on 12v direct.
