getting the correct pressure for years?
getting the correct pressure for years?
hey everyone. I have own my cpap machine, the remster philips one i think its called, for about 5 years. As well as an philips marage full mask. I have been my entire life a mouth sleeper and have never used my nose to breathe while i sleep. When i got my machine 5 years ago i dont even remember what pressure or cpap or auto setting it was on. i have been messing around with the pressure and auto settings for YEARS. I have not once had a full nights sleep with my mask on, ever. I have tried pressure from as low as 3 to as high as 18. I can NEVER get it right and i have no idea what to do anymore. it always feel that when i try to sleep with it on it feels like i have a blanket over my mouth while trying to breathe. I recently decided to get a new mask thinking maybe all these years its been my mask that it makes me feel like this or something, i bought another full facemask and it should be coming in the mail next week.
I just dont know what do. my life has been so terrible always sleepy and i have this great machine and tool to help me fix all this and i have not been able to sleep with it on EVER! I dont know how to describe the feeling of how it feels with the mask on. It feels like a blanket is over my head while sleeping and my breathing is so limited. If i wear my mask and left it up a tiny bit on the bottom of my chin and my face and the air is rushing out it feels so much better and normal. I do use sleepyhead and i have YEARS worth of data of me messing around with settings and pressure but i can never find out what i need to fix since reading sleephead is so difficult. maybe someone here can help me privately and i can send all the data to them and they can help me?

How about starting with listing all of your equipment and settings in your profile. (specifically the exact brands and models)beanz1910 wrote:hey everyone. Have you always used a range of pressures or have you tried single pressure?
Do you use a heated humidifier? What is your HH setting? (Note: Too much heated humidity might cause more congestion)
If you're using a higher HH setting, you could try turning it down or off.
Do you do nasal cleansing before bedtime?
Do you know if you have anything like enlarged turbinates or deviated septum.......or allergies?
We'll try to do our best to help you. Glad to hear you're already using Sleepyhead.

Re: getting the correct pressure for years?
Welcome to the forum.
Can you tell us exactly what model machine you have? Look for a REF number on the bottom. That will tell us what features you have available to you. Fortunately, you have data, and that is the ideal way to find the right pressure settings for you. Post some recent graphs, and people here can look at them and advise you.
Also, tell us what problems you have had. For example, many people feel like they are starving for air, or suffocating. That problem is usually caused by the starting pressure being too low. Most people need to start at 6 or 7 just to feel comfortable (regardless of actual pressure needs). If the needed pressure is a lot higher, then some people will use the ramp or a range of pressures.
There are other settings that help with comfort such as humidity and temp. Some people like really high humidity settings, others need it low or off.
Also, masks are a real challenge. Some people need to try a lot of masks before finding the one that fits right and feels comfortable. I use the Resmed Quattro FX mask. I am also a serious mouth breather. I am physically capable of breathing through my nose at night, but I do not like the sensation. I tried once intentionally and hated it. I can breathe with a full face mask and not have airflow through my nose. I also have a mouth only mask that I use some of the time. It is a little different since it has a mouth piece that actually goes in the mouth. I had to modify mine a little as I do not sleep with my mouth wide open, just a little. If I could get it designed a little differently, I would use this mask full time.
It can be a challenge to find the right settings for successful pressure AND comfort. But that is what you need to be successful. There are lots of people here who are happy to help and have experience with various issues. So, tell us what you have in the way of equipment, and what problems you are having. We will do our best to help you turn this around and be successful.

Re: getting the correct pressure for years?
The machines have a generic name, so we need the actual model number. Otherwise, we can't tell what actual machine you have.
Also, please post a typical recent night. Knowing that you have tried lots of various pressures only tells us that you haven't found the magic combo of successful treatment and comfort. But it doesn't give us any hints as to what to recommend. We need to see a night's graph to see what what type and number of events you had with a specific pressure setting. From there, we can see if you need to raise pressure, recommend a straight pressure or range, etc. But we need to be able to see the type of events, how frequent they are, and what pressures they are occurring at.

I was a dedicated mouth-breather before I started therapy........figured out how to do quickie nasal cleansing routine before bedtime and have trained myself to become a nasal breather.

I don't see anything wrong with those reports. The "numbers" look pretty good.beanz1910 wrote:Here are some screen shots of recent nights on all types of settings and pressures.
If you want to try a single pressure, about any one of those should treat you well. Just find a pressure that's comfortable and stick with it for a period of time. There's not alot of pressure spikes in those reports, but if by chance they ARE bothering your sleep, you could try single pressure. Just set your minimum and maximum to the same setting.

Have you tried turning it off and just putting cool water in it?
That's what I've always done.....it's called "passover" humidification. Helps keep my nasal passages open.

Re: getting the correct pressure for years?
Have you tried wearing a soft cervical collar to help keep your head up, which would keep your airway open more and your jaw closed (if not your lips)? Many people do that, and find it helps a lot. It is also very important to try each different setting for at least a few days each so you know for sure that it works or doesn't work, rather than changing too many things too often.
