Could that have less to do with the French culture and more to do with the fact that you are an 'expert' who doesn't trust patients?
You will find plenty of professional experts (sleep doctors, sleep technicians, respiratory therapists) in the U.S. who can't imagine their patients taking very good care of their own CPAP therapy.

It's nice to attend school, get a certificate, and receive an income,
BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE AN EXPERT.
My point, exactly!

I think there is a subtle difference, between Europe and North America, in society's relation to authority figures such as medical professionals. This isn't to say that doctors and nurses don't enjoy great respect in North America, but in my experience there has not been the same degree of 'democratization' of healthcare information and emphasis on patient empowerment and advocacy outside of the US (and Canada). There are pros and cons on each side...

Well said. I look forward to the post. I hope you start a thread on it, if you feel like it.

I believe that the primary audience of this forum is people who at least in some respects, the medical profession has failed.
I find it interesting to consider different healthcare delivery models. As many posts on this forum will attest to, the current system isn't perfect. It would be interesting to know what the true costs of noncompliance in using CPAP costs. My bet is that it would more than pay for a couple of home visits.
The support and knowledge found on this forum has been important to many people in improving their health, mine included. How could that support and knowledge be delivered by healthcare providers? Maybe the system in France is more effective. Maybe it is more effective for French people and wouldn't "translate" to the American system. Interesting to consider. I hope more people post about their experiences in other places. Thanks so much.

For the U.S., I can't see the future to know what CPAP after-the-sale service looks like then. But, I can 100% sure tell you it will not be skilled professionals working one-on-one with patients.

+1
After-the-sale service is 99% education. (Cpaptalk is 99% education.)
Education is going away from one person in front of a class. The education industry will scream and fight, but it will happen. This is all the more reason that learning to use a CPAP system will not be one-on-one. I think all members here already understand that.

I should have mentioned MIT has made all their courses online and free to the world. Then there is the magnificent Kahn Academy.

The French system might be ideal for those with access to capable, motivated professional care; and don't mind paying for it through their taxes. Opposition to anything that mildly suggests of socialism has high opposition here.

Chunk,
Bernie's on the line and he'd like to have a word with you.
Should I put him on hold?

I LOVE this Forum. Just reading this thread makes me so happy and fortunate to have found this before I started treatment and to have the resource as I go forward in my treatment. The back and forth is such a balancing facet. Thank you to all of you who give of your time to help us.
