Replacement CPAP
Replacement CPAP
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea approximately 15 years ago which was the only sleep study I have ever been through. I was prescribed a CPAP @ 12cm. I am currently using a Puritan Bennett GoodKnight 420s but am looking to upgrade to something that I can view my sleep info on. I am calling a local sleep clinic to see about having a follow-up study performed and obtain a new prescription for a replacement machine. I have been looking at the Resmed AirSense 10, any other machines that I should be looking into? Should I opt for a Auto CPAP instead of the regular one? I want something that will allow me to see my sleep results and make changes if deemed necessary.

Re: Replacement CPAP
First, ask for a prescription. You may be allowed to skip the study,
but take it if you have to. Fifteen years is a long time.
You may even qualify for a "fancier" machine.
I recommend the Airsense 10 Autoset, or even the Autoset for Her.
All auto machines can be run in single pressure mode, though that is a jealously guarded secret.
Good luck. Welcome to the party.

Glad to hear your 420s is still running. Lots of them have died long ago.upstech76 wrote:I was diagnosed with sleep apnea approximately 15 years ago which was the only sleep study I have ever been through. I was prescribed a CPAP @ 12cm. But, if you get an APAP (Auto), then you can also set it for straight pressure mode, too. The APAPs have more options.
Do you have insurance?
Do you have a copy of your prescription?
If you get a newer machine ( like a Philips/Respironics System One or DreamStation OR a ResMed S9 or Airsense 10 ), you can use "Sleepyhead" software to monitor your therapy and shouldn't need another sleep study.
Check out https://www.cpap.com or http://www.secondwindcpap.com for decent prices of what the machines are currently going for.
Another option is to browse through the postings on the forum and look for machines that are for sale by forum members.......like "Grayghost4".

Re: Replacement CPAP
I have insurance and have met my deductible and out of pocket maximum for the year. Anything I do this year will be covered at 100%. I really like the idea the airsense will communicate directly with my iPhone.

Re: Replacement CPAP
Going to the Dr soon to get a new prescription for a replacement machine. Leaning toward the Airsense 10 Autoset but have seen several resent post about problems with them recently. Starting to think I'd be better off with the older S9. I want a machine that is going to be durable and compatible with Sleepyhead. Any advise on machine durability?

What app did you find? I have a myair.resmed.com account to view data online (plus I use sleepyhead too), but I cannot locate an app from Resmed...?englandsf wrote:I found the app, that's what I did not know about. Thx

Re: Replacement CPAP
The premium auto machines are the Airsense 10 Autoset and Philips Respironics Dreamstation Auto. Either are very good and highly regarded machines. Occasional problems are reported here with machines, however there are no current recalls or known defects in either of those machines, and I would not hesitate to accept an Airsense 10 Autoset. Some of the machines have been reported to be "noisy". As long as you obtain your machine from a Resmed provider, it is warranted for 3-years. I wouldn't let the random problems affect my choice at this point.upstech76 wrote:Going to the Dr soon to get a new prescription for a replacement machine. Re: Replacement CPAP
Well today is the day, 1st time seeing a sleep dr since my original diagnosis 15 years ago! Think I have decided on a dreamstation auto and some type of nasal pillow mask but not sure which yet. Going to try and convince the sleep dr that I don't need another sleep study and I just need a new machine, hopefully my plan works.

Re: Replacement CPAP
I don't know how to replace my 5 years old APAP, for which I paid from my pockets, except by paying from my pockets, again. I have Medicare and BCBS medigap since 20 years ago. It seems to me that it is too complicated to do it with Medicare. See this email which I received 4 months ago from Nationwide Medical, but I never received any supply from them:
Ok. Would you like the full shipment mask, cushions, tubing, and filters? As for the new CPAP if it is over 5 years we would need a prescription from your Doctor and to go through the insurance if they will cover a brand new one. Would you like to start that process with my Clinical Care team?

Complicated? They are just asking for a prescription.avi123 wrote:I don't know how to replace my 5 years old APAP, for which I paid from my pockets, except by paying from my pockets, again. But how do I prove (to who) that I had my present machine for 5 years if I paid from my pockets for it, in Jan. 2011?

Re: Replacement CPAP
You shouldn't have to prove it if they didn't pay for it. They are only concerned with how often they pay for machines. With my Ins. they will replace the machine every 3 years.
