Post by kalibuddz » Thu Apr 14, 2016 12:46 am

I just started using my Cpap I have a DreamStation from Philips Respironics I was wondering if its possible to put anything bad inside the system like the filter chemicals like crystal meth because lately when I use it I feel like my blood pressure is high and I also get something called oscillopsia when I wake up and Im using the Cpap Im not sure if its inside my head or outside when the machine blowing air out the mask this is a serious question I dont use drugs by the way but I do have a very suspicious person renting one of my rooms inside my house so I don't know

You FEEL your BP is high? Why not get a reputable home monitor (or borrow one from your MD if poss.) and check it properly? And why self diagnose for oscillopsia instead of seeing an opthalmologist?

Keep your room locked up - you're responsible for your machine and what goes into it!

And kick that tenant out. It has to be very uncomfortable going to sleep each night with a "suspicious" person in the home.

Yes. Some people put essential oils near the filter inlet. It's recommended not to put anything on the filter itself or inside the machine, but I wouldn't be surprised if some did either of those things as well.

So far as I'm aware, most illegal/bad drugs require more than just airflow to enter the air. Heat, solvents, or something else is required to deliver via air. While some drugs can be inhaled when finely powdered there would be visible evidence of this powder throughout the machine if this were the case, and I doubt it would be a very efficient method to deliver such drugs.

So even if they have access to your machine, and even if they are putting things inside or on it, it's unlikely that they would have much effect.

The nice thing about things that would have an effect, such as solvents, essential oils, etc is that they evaporate even when the machine is off, and you can smell them without using the machine. They will eventually dissipate even if you don't use your machine, and you could speed up the process by running your cpap without wearing it.

If you still worry someone is trying to drug you, you can buy drug tests from the pharmacy to see if your body contains anything.

High blood pressure and oscillopsia/nystagmus can't be easily diagnosed over the internet, particularly with such limited information. If either of these are concerning to you or prevent you from doing the things you need or want to do, check with your doctor.

We can't tell either. Best to find someone that can accurately measure and diagnose these symptoms.

Examine your equipment. Remove the filter, check just inside the holes, clean the humidifier, hoses, and mask. Replace the filter. These are fairly simple machines, so if someone has put something in it you should see some evidence of that. Keep in mind that sometimes the water in the humidifier will leave behind white deposits, particularly if you don't use distilled water with it.

Secure your room and your medical equipment. A locked luggage bag might be enough to prevent small scale snooping and theft, but if you regularly have renters it's probably worthwhile investing in a medium sized cheap safe. Harbor Freight and similar importers will often carry a medium sized safe for $100-$200 and that would hold your valuables and medical equipment when you aren't around to keep an eye on them. Make certain you properly install the safe, including the bolts that go from the inside to the floor or wall.

There are also a number of methods to detect if someone has been in your room, including small alarms and alarm systems as well as security cameras you can set up.

If I were in your situation, I'd first secure my equipment and second see a doctor about my other issues.

first. I don't think you'd be sleeping if someone were dosing you with meth.

second, if your suspicious person were using meth, your cpap isn't going to magically suck that out of their stash.... I've heard cpaps be blamed for some far fetched things, but never drug sniffing.

How long have you been using CPAP? You might just be suffering from some of the initial adjustment problems.

Also, be careful you're not blaming CPAP for some unrelated medical condition.

As for someone sabotaging your CPAP, I guess it's possible, but very unlikely. There are lots of nasty chemicals. Some are odorless. It seems really unlikely for someone to attack you this way unless they're a spy or something. It would be especially unlikely for a "regular" person to find and use a chemical that would work this way and not smell bad or burn your throat.

It seems like an awfully complicated way to attack you. There would probably be much easier ways to poison or kill you.

Meth or other recreational drugs probably wouldn't work in your CPAP. They usually don't vaporize unless you burn them in a pipe or something. Most of the things that could do you harm like this would probably smell. Unless he's running something like a meth lab in his room, any drug use by him is unlikely to affect you and I suspect that would stink to high heaven as well.

What are ALL of your equipment settings?

Consult with a doctor!

And, get Sleepyhead software and monitor your therapy.
