Mask cleaning - now slick as greased lightning?

Post by bpb21 » Sat Apr 09, 2016 10:55 am

Have: Amara View mask. Thought I was getting used to it, put a chin strap with it, started getting leaks again and mask resumed creeping up my face during the night.

I figure it's probably time to clean the mask. Doesn't seem dirty, but probably oils from my skin or something...

Anyway, I clean as per directions with mild soap and water.

Now, the mask surface that contacts my skin is slick; like really slick. Like it's not possible to create a seal with the thing. Not fun sleeping with a whoopee cushion on your face. Last night I reportedly had a mask fit of 4.0%.

What's the correct way...no, scratch that; what's the most effective way to clean these? Wet-naps? Rubbing alcohol? Dishwasher? Throw in with laundry? Gun oil? Bleach and white vinegar?

Been using them, although I have to cut a larger hole out the middle of them or else the material settles over my nostrils during the night. How often do you have to replace liners? Does the mask still need cleaning if you always use a liner?

My head must be shaped like a greased pig!

Use baby wipes with no alcohol in them to clean the mask a few times a week. No more slick.

Avoid face lotions before bed, and wash the oils off your face at night.

It's possible you're overthinking this.......

What soap did you use?

I'd recommend Dawn dishwashing liquid. Should take any "slick" stuff off of the surfaces.

Disassemble the mask. Set any fabric or foam parts like the headgear aside. Wash the plastic bits in a regular home dishwasher. Top rack, use the hottest water setting you have. Normal dishwashing detergent. Don't use any rinse aids. No dishes at the same time.

I've been doing my masks this way over 10 years and get a good lifetime out of the my masks.
