No Distilled Water, Can Filtered Water Be Used?

In the event that I am out of distilled water for my CPAP humidifier (I'm absent-minded, so this seems to happen to me too often), would tap water that has gone through a Brita filter (we have a Brita pitcher) be an acceptable replacement? Just wondering if using anything other than distilled water would do harm to the humidifier.

Truth is yes, you can use water out of the toilet, if you want to, just try to get it before the dog gets his drink. The downside only fresh distilled water is recommended, the Brita is good but still leaves residue buildup. The toilet, really I think I'd do without the HH that night. Jim

If you can't remember to buy distilled water, buy two, when you empty the first one, tie it to your finger as a reminder to replace it.

Filtering water with something like a Brita or Pur filter does not remove total dissolved solids. Those filters remove favors and chlorine/chloramates. The only way to get TDS free to water is either distill it or through reverse osmosis and a deionizing resin.

a *fact* I found out while reading keurig forums, talking about how much less crap is left in their fancy coffee machines and consequentially how much less often they have to clean them, if they run their water through a brita filter.

The Brita filter contains activated carbon which removes chlorine and other materials giving water an off flavor.


The ZeroWater filter contains a deionizing resin to remove dissolved free floating ions in the water.


Call Brita, Pur or any other consumer manufacturer if their product contains a deionizing resin.

Numerous studies have been done on Brita and Pur filters and they conclude that they don't remove all total dissolved solids, regardless of what you read on your Keurig forum.

You can use bottled water and you can use tap water. You can even use well water. The only reason why you are using distilled is because otherwise, you accumulate mineral deposits. After awhile, it will affect your humidity level as the plate has to 'cook' through the minerals to heat the water. Right now, I'm taking care of a family member every other week and just find it too much hassle with dragging along 'special' water, so use whatever is in the tap. When I'm home, I just soak a little vinegar on the bottom to remove the accumulation. A Brita filter does not remove enough minerals - some, but not worth wasting the filter on it, IMHO.

People use bottled water because it is portable. It generally has less mineralization than my tap water, but they don't specifically filter the minerals out. Distilled water doesn't have the minerals.

If you use non-distilled water, it's important to dump the water every morning. It would also be good to dump it in the morning, rinse it, empty it, then refill just before bed.
