cpap not taking care of apnea

Post by kathie sovereign » Sun Mar 27, 2016 12:21 pm

I have been using a cpap for over 2 yrs. They have never been able to get the ahi's where they wanted to. They have tried the auto setting and thought the setting of 13 was the answer. This then didn't work. I had a repeat sleep study which said my setting should be 6. The ahi was 21 at home when they increased the setting to 8. I am ready to give up on using it at all. With a loaner machine it was better but when they gave me a different one to send mine in to be checked it was about 21AHI. Please help!!!!!

Welcome......going to need more info than this...however my first thought was, your head might be tilting cutting off air flow. A soft cervical collar will prevent this..

Hi - Please tell us in as much detail as possible what machine/model you have and what kind of mask. Without even that much we have next to nothing to go on and would like to help. Have you ever used software to monitor your own progress?

The machine I am using is a RESMED S9 with a humidifier on it. My mask is a sm quattro/airfit F10. My setting is on 9 now. The mask is a new type in Jan. and is fitting much better than the old one.

Never heard of Pristar or autocore, so I also think you're not in the US or Canada... not sure what you meant by "uses all the words in the Remstar book", tho' I suppose you mean the manual. But what words in what context and how do they relate to your machine? We really would like to help, but need some info.

I live in the united states. The description I gave was the one when I first received the cpap. What it says on the manual is ResMed autoset elite H5i. on the machine it say autoset and EPR on the top of the lid. Hope his helps.

Would you download Sleepyhead software (free) to Imgur.com and size the reports appropriately, then leave a link in this thread so we can see what's going on overnight from all the data SH gives? To be clear, are you only using Cpap mode, or Apap now?

Sounds like the problem is THEY are in charge of your therapy instead of YOU. My untreated AHI was 37.0. The treatment level they prescribed was 6.0 fixed. That lowered the average AHI into the mid-20's over a month. It was only through the use of Sleepyhead software, learning how to post the results here, and the kind assistance of the regulars here that enabled me to get my AHI reliably below 2.0. It took six or seven settings changes before I hit the sweet spot. You can try to go through that process with your doctors, and good luck if you choose to do so. Or you can learn a few simple things and get much quicker help here. I recommend the latter.

There are threads here on downloading Sleepyhead and how to use it. And also other threads on how to organize your data and upload a screenshot that will help the kind folks here help you.

Good luck!

And that manual is more than likely the patient manual.
You need the clinician manual, which you can get for free.
Somebody here has the link where you can download the PDF.

the clinicians manuals are often multi-machine too

persperonics latest cheapout is an absolutely minimalist clinical manual that covers *ALL* the dreamstation machines.... with a big grid of what settings go to what machine.

12 whole pages.... lots of good info in there, eh?
