Fitting nasal cannula to Quattro FX mask

Post by Arizona-Willie » Sat Mar 19, 2016 1:36 pm

How do you make a nasal cannula fit the Quattro FX mask?

The fittings on the bottom of the mask are too far apart and the cannula keeps coming off during the night.

I have the thing taped to my hose so it doesn't get pulled on but still the darn thing won't stay put.

I've been tempted to cut it in half and seal it with super glue but not sure that is a good idea.

Once I stuck it under the air filter on the back of the S9 APAP but I'm not sure how well that worked. Normally I can smell the output of the cannula but not if I put it under the air filter.

Beside I got to worrying that I was pushing pure oxygen through a fan and all it would take is a small spark and there could be trouble.

What is the best way to fit supplemental oxygen to this S9 APAP?

I have the climate hose but suppose I could do without that and use a regular hose.

resmed has you covered: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... rt-S9.html

if you were using a regular hose, https://www.cpap.com/productpage/oxygen ... apter.html

alternately, if you don't mind velcroing your o2 hose to your mask hose, there are two oxygen ports on the bottom of the mask covered with the squidgy plugs.

item 6 on page IV here: http://www.resmed.com/in/dam/documents/ ... ac_eng.pdf

Thanks for the info on that hose with the oxygen port.

Just exactly what I needed.

Yes I knew about the port on the bottom of the mask but the cannulas we have don't fit very well and keeps coming off.

This hose will solve the problem completely.

Usually my DME supplies my hoses and stuff but i'm not going to wait 3 months for them to call again and maybe even find out they don't supply this hose because it costs more.

But they do supply the Climate Line hoses so perhaps they will after I get the first one. Next time they call I will find out.

But this is a perfect solution ... spot on ... thanks again.

you don't put the cannula there, you put a regular oxygen hose there. the cannula is only for your nose if you've got a plain hose, you can use that until you get the oxy climateline.

There are two holes so you can choose whichever one works best.
Just leave the other one closed.
{{{Two holes--two cannula; I can see how that happened.
It kind of makes sense.}}}

The mask comes with a plug for those two holes and there is no good way ( using that plug ) to plug only one hole.

As I remember the manual says those holes are for cannulas.

I had presumed there might be more than one type of cannula but my problem was resolved with the info about the Climate Hose with the oxygen fitting.

I ordered one immediately and am paying out of pocket.

Hopefully my DME will supply them from now on. They supply my Climate Line hose so I don't see why they wouldn't pay for the one with the oxygen fitting too.

Now I need to find a cheap QUIET oxygen compressor, perhaps even used from Ebay so I have my own instead of using my owners when she is over taking care of her 95 year old mother.

My O2 readings are rarely above 91 and often in the mid 80's and when I have used hers I felt much better in the morning. Seems to help with clearer thinking etc.

I had a mask similar to that one for years, with the same ports, and the same plug, you can unplug one side and leave the other side plugged in. or put a piece of tape over the other side from the inside.

an oxygen cannula is just designed to fit up in your nose and deliver oxygen. those ports on the bottom are for oxygen hoses, some masks have one port, some have two, some masks have the ports a long distance apart, like on opposite side of the mask :

Well the mask you are showing is NOT a Quattro FX it is a NASAL mask.

My Quattro FX has two ports on the bottom of the mask that the manual called ports but cannulas don't fit even though it looks like they should.

As you said there are two ports side by side and the cannula has two prongs which look like they should fit right onto those ports.

That's why I came here looking for a solution ----- which I found.

Perhaps that nasal mask come with a bunch of plugs to fill those holes, I dunno.

I gave up on nasal masks years ago.

I've been a hosehead for 10 years.

At any rate, my problem has been solved.

it is a HYBRID mask. I know that it's not the one you have, I looked up, and linked, the manual for the one you have.

cannulas don't fit because those oxygen ports aren't designed for cannulas. they're designed for oxygen HOSES. as I've been saying. the mirage quattro has the *exact same ports* that yours does, and I used that mask for years.
Arizona-Willie wrote:As you said there are two ports side by side and the cannula has two prongs which look like they should fit right onto those ports.
there are two ports for people that might need, for whatever reason TWO HOSES. perhaps the need more oxygen than can be reliably delivered through a single tube.

If the manufacturer's data actually uses the term "cannula", they are doing so incorrectly.
---(Unless the Australian definition differs from that in the USA.)
It would not be the first time. Or the last.
