My first night is tonight

Post by Tmommy4 » Tue Mar 08, 2016 8:17 pm

I have the S9 Autoset for her and a Resmed F10 for her mask. I have it all set up and ready to go. I've tried on my mask (full face mask) and don't feel claustrophobic. It says I have a good fit. The pressure kind of scared me at first but when I relaxed and just breathed, it was better. I'm motivated for this to work and I really want to wear it all night tonight. I know I need it ...

I'm thinking I will use humidity. That would be good since I have sinus issues, I think.

I'm interested in this Sleepyhead software everyone is talking about. If I have a laptop that has an SD card slot, should that work or do I need something else?

Should be all you need.

Careful with the humidity if your present climate's already humid - too much can cause congestion, etc. in some people, but you have to judge for yourself of cousre.

Congrats! Sounds like you have the right attitude and a great set of equipment! Good luck. Most people do find some amount of humidity helpful for tolerating CPAP.

Good luck Tmommy!

I hope you have a great night and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to face your day. If not, don't give up. It may take some adjustment to find your sweet spot.

remember, the pressure the cpap supplies is *LESS* than what it takes to blow bubbles in a tall glass of water.

Well, I believe my first night was a success! I was actually ready to get up when my alarm went off. That in itself is an improvement. I have red marks on my cheeks but I think the top part of my headgear was too tight. I loosened them this morning and it felt better. It felt very strange to breathe through my mouth. I think I could eventually go to a nasal pillow mask. I had a couple episodes of "omg there's something on my face" but then I remembered it was only my CPAP mask. I didn't think the pressure was very high. But unless I'm missing something, I can't tell what pressures I used by looking at the display.

Lots to learn, but I'm thinking I can do this!

A couple other things. I didn't try the humidity because I didn't have any distilled water. It wasn't bad without it. I will try maybe a low level of humidity. Also, when I took the mask off this morning? Wow. I had to catch my breath!

Very glad you had a good night as first ones go! Just a quick question - it sounded from what you said almost as if you deliberately breathed through your mouth, though I may be wrong, and I'm curious to know why you thought(?) you needed to. Full face masks allow you to do that if you have to, but do not require that you do it for any reason.

It's important to use distilled water as a general rule, but many use tap water often for various reasons and as long as you're scrupulous about cleaning the tank when needed, I wouldn't forego humidity if you feel you want it.

Hi Julie,

No, I knew I could breathe through my nose, and I did most of the time. It was more like, you know how sometimes you need a deeper breath? Like that.

What are your pressure settings?

distilled water is mostly a convenience, so that you don't get mineral buildup in the water tank. a vinegar soak will take care of any minerals.

Ok, I figured out how to get into my settings. It's set at 4-20. Under pressure it says 9.4 and I used it 6.4 hours. Under AHI it doesn't say anything but I probably would have seen a number there this morning?

I need to download the software but I read that there are problems with Windows 10 and the SD card.

Do you feel you can breathe easily at 4 (the default low setting of the machine... the one most of us find very difficult to get enough air at)?

The majority of us end up raising that (don't worry about the high end 20 yet, if ever) by at least a couple of #s and then see what Sleepyhead says - if you'd need more or not.

Honestly, I didn't think the 4 was much air at all. I could tell it increased throughout the night. I think I'll try increasing it. Then if my AHI is low, I'm at a good minimum number, right?
