he's *already had* the sleep study, there's no point in doing a split study in the lab, because he's already done the first part, at home. now, they want him in the lab to determine pressures. which is what is done in the second half of the split study you keep going on about.
Re: Newbie going into first sleep study.
If you have been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea through a home study, in all likelihood, they will not be doing any more diagnostic tests to determine your exact AHI. Either way, they will almost for sure be doing a titration this time to determine your required pressure. I would call and ask exactly what they will be doing.
For a titration, you should get a sleeping pill. Ask for two so that you can try one out ahead of time. The sleep lab staff will be grateful if you can tell them how long it takes you to fall asleep with the pill.
The day of your study, get up at the regular time, or little early, limit your coffee to one cup early in the morning, and don't take any naps. If the lab allows some comforts from home like pillows, blankets, and sheets, I suggest bringing them.
For your titration, they will also be checking to see if you are a mouth-breather. If you think you are, don't tell them so. It is best that they start with no pre-conceived ideas. The majority of people with apnea think they are mouth breathers because the apnea forces them to breath through their mouth in their sleep. They will start you with a nasal mask, and move on to using a chin-strap, and finally a full face mask if necessary. They start at the lowest pressure for the nasal mask, and it might make you a little claustrophobic. If it does, don't be afraid to take a few breaths through your mouth to calm yourself down, but do breath through your nose as much as you can. They will have an EEG, and will know that you are still awake, so nobody is going to come rushing in with a chin strap.

Re: Newbie going into first sleep study.
I didn't have a home study - did a split study in a sleep lab.
Sunday night, sleep study.
Monday morning, went home.
17 days later had the followup with my respiratory doctor that ordered the sleep test. This was just an issue with making the appointment - it could've been 2 days if it had worked out. He wrote the prescription and sent it to DME (my choice) and gave me a copy.
2 days after that went to the DME to get my CPAP and supplies. Again, just took the first appointment that was available for both of us.

Re: Newbie going into first sleep study.
Called the lab today and asked questions based on everyone's feedback.
Correct, they already known I have apnea from the home study. They will be setting the pressure (titrating the mask?) in the sleep lab in a few weeks. They tell me after that the dr will review and give me a script. I then choose the xpap mask and machine from the dme. Thanks for the help all.
