What is the airplane mode used for? My air pressure seems to be coming out stronger than before, why is this?

It is my understanding that airplane mode is meant to keep the machine from sending sleep data over a wireless connection. It shouldn't be affecting air pressure.

Register, go to User Control Panel, fill out Equipment Profile and start asking for guidance.

Does anyone know if the mode is used for receiving software/firmware updates? Is the software ever updated?

yes, and yes.
