Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube
Hi,
I was given a prescription for a CPAP after a sleep study.
I was very energetic the next day ( CPAP was tried and determined at 10 cm H2O)
Looking to get this model for a 30 day trial and then purchase:
Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube.
Any experience with this fairly new model?
Plus any other advice with Nose in the hose?
TIA,

It's a good machine that gives full efficacy data, although Sleepyhead has not caught up yet. This is a fixed CPAP machine and is essentially an update to the Philips Respironics RemStar CPAP Pro DS460. I would prefer an auto CPAP model, but this one does a fine job if you know your pressure and can learn to work with a single pressure CPAP to optimize its performance. If you have a choice, the DreamStation Auto is very similar in price and might be better in the long run.

Thank you sleeprider!
My prescription is for CPAP... Not for auto CPAP.
Can't the auto version be set as fixed or auto settings?
I need to consult with Dr before getting the auto version.
More info I found in these links:

Yes, an APAP can be set in CPAP mode, but the converse is not true, a machine that is only CPAP doesn't have an APAP mode. We thrifty types like to buy two machines in one.

Re: Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube
First, an auto-CPAP is a CPAP. The same insurance code applies to the Pro as to the Auto. In the view of most medical professionals they are essentially the same machine. An Auto CPAP however can be set to a range of pressures that prevent obstructive apnea and hypopnea in all sleep positions and sleep stages, while minimizing the pressure when possible. So if your apnea is worse when you lay on your back requiring 12 cmH2O, but less when you are on your side, your auto CPAP can be set to a range like 8-14. This gives you the comfort of lower pressure during the part of the night when that meets your needs, but increase pressure when it senses flow limitations or snores that indicate you are now laying on your back. It happens to work great.
The Auto CPAP also accommodates any changes or differences from your sleep study, like when you have a cold, or allergy or weight gain/loss, that your study could not possibly consider. Auto CPAP is flexible in delivering the therapy you need for the next 5 or more years, under the constantly changing conditions that WILL occur, without you or your doctor having to intervene and change settings. So there are many arguments in favor of auto cpap, and about $50 cash difference in price. What do you think you should get?

Re: Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube
I certainly am glad I went to an auto CPAP machine. I asked for one before I even knew I needed one or read in this forum. I just didn't like the constant pressure of 10- when I could at times enjoy the pressure of 7!

Re: Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube
Thank you for all the replies.
I will get a APAP, but for initial use will set at 10.
As you suggested it's ideal to go with auto mode going forward. In my second study/consultation I will check with my Dr as well about APAP....
I am new to this, but I am convinced after the study night I was very releaved the next day with CPAP. At the beginning of the study the O2 level dropped to 77%.
It took the Tech less than an 1 hour of sleep study to ask me to sleep on the side and then another hour of sleep before hook me to CPAP. People in the next rooms staying for study also complained about the snoring noise from my room...
I will go with two masks during the trial... I saw one with the hose connected to the head then air flow through the sides and will try a nose, mouth mask.

Re: Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube
Deep3sleeper, there are many options for masks, and getting the right one can be the most challenging part of CPAP therapy. Many of us use nasal pillows because they are the smallest on your face and easiest to seal and use. If you don't have leaks through the mouth, give them a try. I use the Resmed Airfit 10P. Sounds like one of the masks you are trying is a DreamWear nasal. It's new and I haven't tried it, but others who have, moved back to the Airfit. The other mask you are trying is a full face mask of some kind. Great if you need it, but definitely larger, more leak prone and tends to keep you from moving as freely in bed.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube
I am Ontario, Canada
Due to gov laws APAP machines can't be purchased without prescription. Otherwise they won't reimburse portion of the cost (75%) of machine cost is paid by prov gov insurance.
However, they did allow one Australian model (Rev) by accident which supports both fixed and auto modes...
My prescription is only CPAP, I have a 30 day window to test Dreamstation pro with heated hose.
Picked up the unit today.
After a month I have an appointment with Dr at that time I will discuss about APAP.
I have the dreamer ware mask with hose on the top
Let's see how it goes...

Re: Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube
If you are in Ontario, you will not get an APAP under the ADP discount unless you qualify for an APAP.
If you want an APAP and you don't qualify, the only option is to pay for one out of pocket.
BTW, the "mistake" that listed the APAP as a CPAP won't fly - most providers will know that they won't get reimbursed and won't bother with even trying to give you an APAP when you only qualify for a CPAP.

Re: Dreamstation CPAP pro with humidifier and heated tube
Deep3Sleeper, I did not know you were in Ontario until your last post. As I said originally, the CPAP Pro is a very good machine that will probably work great for you. It's fairly rare for people in your area to get auto CPAP, so enjoy the good sleep and therapy you get with the pro, and don't worry about it. As you gain more time on the machine and some data, we can probably help you to understand what is going on. Best of luck!
