Replacing a 9 yr old machine, what to know?

Post by kcl » Mon Jan 11, 2016 3:40 pm

Just had my sleep study last night and will be replacing my machine as soon as its read. Last time I just took the one they gave me, with humidifier and its been a fine machine but wondering if there is more to think about as far as options I should consider. Thanks for the help!

What did they give you and what have you been using all these years?
Specific brand and model.
Some have been data-capable and some haven't.
Have you been monitoring your therapy with software all these years?

Lots of things have changed in the last nine years.

I would HOPE that you would keep your 9-year-old machine for a backup. I'm sure it was paid for long ago.

I would suspect just about anything they (the insurance company if you're going through insurance)
give you would be pretty good. I had my first machine for ten years, it was a brick with no Smarts but I guess it worked ok.
Then I found out my insurance would pay for a new machine every five years so they set me up with an "M series" Auto machine. Now I think I have 60 series but
I don't worry too much about the data like many do. The display of my machine is pretty helpful with some basic information, if I had the software program
and the ability to understand what it all means I could look at that data. I could have looked at (and did) that same data with my "M series" machine too.

Anyway, my point really is I'd bet you'd get more information than you'd want with most any of the machines out there.

This is just my opinion.

Den, Its a Remstar M series. There hasn't really been any follow up with the sleep Dr. due to some life circumstances I'll not go into here, but I do have a renewed commitment for my health. For all these years though, I have been 100% compliant. I had resumed some mouth breathing but last night at the lab she upped the pressure and woke up and could tell that I did not mouth breath, at least not significantly. The Dr. said if the pressure was increased to a proper level the mouth breathing should stop. Came home to my old machine and finished my nights sleep and woke up knowing I had been mouth breathing.

And I will most certainly keep the little workhorse "just in case" for a back up.

Any idea which one? There was a basic model the "Plus", the "Pro", and a couple of versions of the Auto (first one with C-Flex only and the next with both C-Flex and A-Flex).

Here is a list of the CPAP versions. The model number should be on the bottom of the machine and a model name on the top (maybe).

REMstar Basic (no SmartCard)............. DS100*, DS100H*
REMstar Plus with C-Flex (no SmartCard) DS200*, DS200H*
REMstar Plus with C-Flex and SmartCard DS200S, DS200HS

REMstar Pro with C-Flex.................... DS400S, DS400HS

REMstar Auto with C-Flex.................. DS500S, DS500HS
REMstar Auto with A-Flex.................. DS510S, DS510HS

The "latest and greatest" model Philips/Respironics is the "Dreamstation". Specify that you ONLY want the Auto.
The "latest and greatest" model of the ResMed line is the "Airsense 10". Again, specify you ONLY want the Autoset model.

Den, I really don't see where it would say what it is. Just a basic model I think. There are no bells or whistles on it and the only thing I think I can do with it is change the altitude setting. It has worked really well for me.

you have to remove the blower from the humidifer to see the label (bad design).

lift up on the front edge of the blower, it just presses down on to two posts at the front of the humidifier base. it can take a little force if it's been stuck on there for a long time.
