Service connected disability, Sleep Apnea connection
I am working through a service connected disability claim for sleep apena as it has worsened due to my sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and deviated septum.
Anyone else go through this in the last year or two? The contract doctor that the VA sent me to, said that he WILL connect the Sleep Apnea to the sinusitis as it was obvious I am a mouth breather and cannot breath unaided through my nose.
Thanks,
Rich

Curiosity maks me ask...how are any of these ailments related to service?R1200ST wrote:I am working through a service connected disability claim for sleep apena as it has worsened due to my sinusitis, allergic rhinitis and deviated septum.

Re: Service connected disability, Sleep Apnea connection
my recollection is that the VA has something called the "presumptive period." If certain health problems are diagnosed within a year of separation from service, the problem will be considered a service-connected disability. Hypertension is one; don't know about apnea.
My free advice when dealing with the VA and other fed agencies: document everything.

Exposure to chemicals, etc caused the allergic Rhinitis. concussion with a deviated septum was given to me thanks to a blackhawk fuel drop tank.
Allergic rhinitis for the last 15 years progressed into sinusitis. Sinusitis with deviated septum has degraded into apnea.
Any type of damage to your body caused by the military is "service connected". You can have 0% issues up to 100% issues which then you are basically done for.
Right now I am at 60% disability and year over year degrading. Anytime a new issue is caused by a service connected issue, it is reviewed and if warranted, "connected" to the service disability.
I was hoping that someone here has walked this road already but I guess not.
Thanks.

I don't use the VA medical system, but I could if I wanted to. I know they will either perform the sleep studies, or will send you for one. They do furnish CPAP or bilevel machines and masks if required. One of the men I used to work with before I retired does all of his medical through the VA, and he recently got a new CPAP machine and mask from the VA that replaced his old ones. I chose not to mess with them since I had very good medical insurance when I was working, and now use Medicare and Tricare for life.

Can I blame all of my breathing problems on all of the cigarette smoke in those WWII barracks? And the fuel oil heat in the 7 man tents? The burner usually clogged up in the middle of the night and it we'd sleep until we were being choked from the fumes...
Not to mention being awakened in the middle of the night listening to 8 different languages being spoken in "our sleep"...

Sorry do I know you? Is this comment below supposed to be critical of my condition / service connected disability?
I don't recall saying anything sarcastic and derogatory in this forum and I consider your comments below to be derogatory and uncalled for. If you have nothing to add that HELPS people, which this forum is for asking and offering HELP to others, then keep your snarky comments to yourself.

I may have missed it, but I didn't see what you quoted as an attack on you or etc... I've been known to be wrong though, plenty of times.

I think what's he's trying to express, life isn't easy, not everything we encounter, gives us the the right to suck on the government's breasts. Granted many have been put in harm's way, to get a job that needed to be done, many have gave all. For these people I am thankful, I just wish we had taken better care of the ideals they fought to secure. Jim

There are a lot of old, sleep deprived, disgruntled and damaged people on this forum. Many are like "If I can't have this toy, you can't have it either so I will break it or just scream until I am blue in the face and you get tired of me making noise"R1200ST wrote:Sorry do I know you? To respond to all of you as I responded to the his PM, my comments were not intended to be derogatory or demeaning to him. Just a fact of life of life in the Army from 66-70...But I do attribute many of my sleeping issues that go well beyond CPAP from military service.
