Variable breathing fraction

Post by GoofyUT » Wed Aug 23, 2006 3:44 pm

Can someone tell me please, what are considered to be acceptable as well as pathognomic variable breathing fractions, as reported in MyEncore?

Many thanks!!
Chuck

NOPE!

When you figure this one out, you let us ALL know, Chuck.
This has been the $64 question since Derek put it in there.....and subject to many posts on the forum.

My average runs somewhere in the mid-20's to low 30's.

Have a good one.

When I was using the REMstar Auto I averaged about 55%. I ran a poll months ago and as I remember most folks were around 30%. As Den said let us know if you find out more.

I found the links for the Polls:

Can someone just define for me what is meant by "variable breathing fraction?"

"Variable breathing" is defined as the situation when a person is not undergoing the quiet steady breathing of several stages of sleep. In particular, according to the Respironics patent" it happens during wakefulness, distress, and REM sleep.

On CPAP, I'm in the 40's on APAP 20 to 30s, So I don't pay attention to it. I unstead worry about AHI, Time spent in Apnea, and Apnea duration, and Snores which seem to cause most of my trouble. If my snores are under 5, everything else falls in place. Jim

Chuck
Uhhh ... that 22.5% of your breathing while sleeping is compsed of breathing while under the influence of wakefulness, distress, and/or REM sleep? ... or it could mean fraction of "time" breathing while under the influence of wakefulness, distress, and/or REM sleep?

I just dunno?

It means "Your Mileage May Vary".....YMMV.

(and so does your breathing)

I was just looking at my sleep study plot and it looks like I spent about one-third of my time awake, REM, and S1 (whatever that means) ... the remainder was spent in S2, S3, and S4 sleep stages (whatever they mean).

- roberto

edit: actaully I never got to S4

S4

Post by GoofyUT » Wed Aug 23, 2006 7:20 pm

S1,2,3 and 4 refer to stages of sleep.

Don'y worry. No one EVER gets to S4 during a sleep study. They don't let us sleep long enough to allow us to get there. (BTW, S3 and S4 are the deepest stages of sleep and are the stages during which the body does most of its restoration. These both decline in terms of percentage of sleep architecture, with age.)

Cheers!
