FFM Issues

Post by epirn » Sun Dec 06, 2015 5:29 pm

I am a new cpap user. I have a Resmed AirSense 10 with ClimateLine Air and Quattro FX mask. I am a mouth breather so need a full face mask. I don't think I am claustrophobic but the mask makes me feel nervous at times. I want to keep fidgeting with it. It especially presses on the left side of my nose making it feel like I cannot get air through that nostril. I have been trying very hard for the last 3 weeks to get used to this mask. It also has a very soft, floppy cushion that seems to collapse or push up irritating the bridge of my nose. Should I try another style mask and if so any suggestions? It is taking me hours to fall asleep when that was never a problem for me before.

Maybe the problem is actually your bed pillow. Many of them have been designed for this therapy and some work better with it. Do some forum searches on "Chiroflow" and "buckwheat" and you'll find many discussions and some suggestions.

Hey Eprin,

When you say you are new to CPAP therapy, how new are you? I encounter patients with this problem quite often, so it's definitely not out of the ordinary. I find the Quattro FX to be a decent mask, but the problems you are talking about with the nasal blockage is going to come from most Full Face Masks. The only difference between that mask and others is that it has no forehead stabilization mechanism which could bring more pressure to the bridge of your nose.

I would suggest 2 things:

Practice! I am not sure how long you have been on a CPAP, but if you take a conscious effort to practice with the machine while you are awake (wearing it while watching TV in the living room or laying in bed reading a book), then you will be able to tolerate the therapy better over time.

Nasal Pads. I know them by the name "Gecko Pad." It is a gel pad that serves as a cushion/barrier between the nose and the mask that will relieve pressure and help reduce air leakage.

I hope this helps!

I use a piece of moleskin on my nose at night to keep the mask from irritating the skin. My DME recommended it after I had a problem with one mask that caused an open sore on my nose. She said her husband used it every night to protect his nose.

My right nostril can be held closed by just a very slight pressure from my mask, due to a deviated septum. Most nights I wear a "Breathe Right" nasal strip that counteracts the mask pressure and holds my nostrils open. It works like a charm for me and I am still able to enjoy a good mask seal, too. Maybe you might also give the strips a try. Good luck.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I will try some of them. Since I have only been using my CPAP for 3 weeks I will persevere. I know it can take time to get used to but everyone tells me it is worth it and they feel so much better because they persisted.

epirn,
I've used FFM's since 2003. Sometimes I have trouble getting them to seal. Main reason is, I think, due to the large seal area. I've had a lot of success with the RespCARE Hybrid FFM. It's a combination nasal pillow & mouth seal mask. It has a considerably smaller area to seal. Might want to take look at it. Good luck finding what works for you.

Cheers,
otrpu
