Nausea using CPAP new symptom.

Post by Sambuka » Tue Nov 17, 2015 1:22 am

Hello

I used my CPAP successfully a few months ago but stopped after some bad nights and little difference between using it and not. Ive now restarted CPAP daily but it's giving me Nausea everytime I finish using it. Even for 1 hour.

I'm getting stomach cramp feelings like needing to goto the toilet has happened over 5 days, I took 1 day break no CPAP and didn't have nausea the next morning . I read some posts that I could be swallowing air.

It's just strange as before I never had this issue. Things that changed since I used it a few months ago are : gained 5 KG weight, tonsils are more inflamed and have a permanent mild right ear tinnitus.

Any ideas what I should look into other than losing weight?

Thanks

History :
I've got mild sleep apnea with a AHI of 8 after a sleep test.

I use a resmed air sense 10 auto set and use it on 5 PSI and get AHI's of about 1.5 a 2-5 in a full night

It sounds like you need to see a doctor as cpap definitely doesn't cause nausea.

Good advice I'll go get checked out tomorrow at the doctors.

Might throw out my old CPAP hose and mask too just invade it grew something nasty while sitting unused for 3 months.

If you are using a full face mask, your other symptoms may be causing you to breathe through you mouth more than before. This might account for an increase in Aerophagia (swallowing air) and be causing your feeling of nausea and abdominal pain.

Sounds like it might be aerophagia...see here
wiki/index.php/Aerophagia

While nausea alone isn't common..when you have nausea with the abdominal discomfort it could be aerophagia.
I have been lucky and not had it happen very often to me but I have had aerophagia so bad a couple of times that it also made me nauseated so I know that it can happen.

It could also simply be a stomach bug which will sort itself out one way or the other.

Have you had an ENT look at those tonsils? If not, you need to. Use an ENT who is well familiar with sleep apnea - hopefully, all of them are by now. Maybe your sleep doctor can recommend one. My sleep doctor recommends an ENT for patients she thinks need to see one. The sleep doc and that ENT compare notes on patients so they get a more full picture of the problems.

Inflamed tonsils can contribute to breathing events during sleep.

Nausea can also be due to thyroid enlargement.

Are you dizzy at all? The air pressure could be affecting your ears. I have occasional vertigo (which causes nausea) that originates in my inner ear.

Thanks for the input, I'm booked into see a ENT in 2 months (they were booked out) for my tonsils. Didn't use the CPAP last night and nausea is far better but still stomach ache. I'll give it a couple of days see if it goes back to normal and try CPAP again once it's cleared up.

Had a lot of flatulence so am certainly wondering if Aerophagia is possible but too soon to tell.

Thanks true could just be a stomach bug. But yes Aerophagia is possible.
