Stopping Dry Mouth
Stopping Dry Mouth
I am getting better with more hours using c-pap but having to turn off machine and get a drink of water from a water bottle I keep beside my pillow several time during the night. ResMed AirSense 10 set to auto climate and air flow increased from 4 to 6 which really helped with a MIrage Quattro full face mask. I like this better than nose pillows and I do not have much problem at all with leaks sleeping on my side. I have tried some setting on my own with out auto climate all the way from 0 heat and o humidifier off. Has any one found a setting that will give them enough moisture so that their mouth and throat at times will not get dry I sure would like to know that info. If I can get setting to where my mouth does not dry out I can keep mask on almost all night long except for a bath room trip or two. I start breathing through my noise but my mouth will drop open once I get to sleep then later dry mouth. Then I have to cut machine off sip water start it up again. Thanks Larry

"Dry mouth" usually indicates "mouth-breathing"........even with a full face mask.Seeing You wrote:I am getting better with more hours using c-pap but having to turn off machine and get a drink of water from a water bottle I keep beside my pillow several time during the night. Are you doing nasal cleansing before bedtime? If not, try that. You need to breathe through your nose.....if possible.
Are you training your tongue to stick to the roof of your mouth? Imagine sucking on a lemon drop.......pucker up!
For me, the cool "passover" humidification was what worked.......along with nasal cleansing. Yeah, it would be nice to have a little more moisture sometimes, but I got used to it (which is actually more humid than what I typically breathe).

Re: Stopping Dry Mouth
CPAP humidifiers are designed to provide moisture to the nasal passages. They can't deliver enough moisture to keep an open mouth from drying out. But, there are a couple of things you can try.Seeing You wrote:Has any one found a setting that will give them enough moisture so that their mouth
1. Wear a soft cervical collar while sleeping. It may help keep your jaw from dropping. I have worn one every night for a few years. It may also allow your machine to be effective at a lower pressure. http://www.amazon.com/Carex-Health-Bran ... cal+collar
2. Use Orajel. See all three of my posts in this thread --> viewtopic.php?f=1&t=108730&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=orajel

Guys thanks so much for input. Here is another story last night I washed out my nose, put a strip on my nose to help hold nose open more. Put my new moisture stuff on my tongue and off to sleep I went with ramp time set back to where it was at 45. Well bless Pete slept good for about two hours then woke up with my mask doing the jump around on my face yuck. Finally took it off . Later tried it one more time and ended up waking with dry mouth so I gave it up. Slept with out it rest of the night so round two tonight with out washing out nose. Will put nose strip on as it helps me with my breathing through my nose. Still trying to get it right but in time I guess I will strange I can get two night with five to seven hours then it all falls apart yuck. The trial goes on. Wife said I just started breathing with my mouth open this last year before I slept with it closed. I have lost weight which should help my BP is down and take no other meds regular. Larry

Re: Stopping Dry Mouth
You didn't mention what humidifier setting you were using. Some people need more and some need less. "Less" is better for me as the cooler humidity helps keep my nasal passages open. Too much warm moist air can cause more nasal congestion for some.Seeing You wrote:Guys thanks so much for input. Could be you need to adjust your headgear a bit. If you're using a range of pressures, it may be going higher than what you have it adjusted for.
Be sure to look at your reports to see what's happening. That will tell you alot about your therapy.
Were you using the Quattro or the nasal mask?
Hang in there.......you'll get it figured out.

Re: Stopping Dry Mouth
I was having trouble for a while because of medications. I used these: XyliMelts for Dry Mouth, Mint-Free, 80-Count Boxes
from Orahealth from Amazon. I still use occasionally. The work great. If the adjustments don't work try them, I started with a trial size for a few dollars.

ChicagoGranny-- how does that cervical collar keep your chin and mouth closed? It is for the spine, not the mouth. I'm looking for something that will keep my mouth closed other than a chin strap that marks my face all the hell up!
Re: Stopping Dry Mouth
A lot of people use the soft collars to help keep their mouths shut as it presses up under their chin. I have personally never tried it as I use a FFM and dont have to deal with dry mouth often. I get a dry mouth normally only when I have mask leaks and it is obvious.Guest wrote:ChicagoGranny-- how does that cervical collar keep your chin and mouth closed? It is for the spine, not the mouth. Re: Stopping Dry Mouth
I have two questions one for Wulfman as to Passover humidity. I like it with FFM but seems my nose gets cold wakes me up after some time. We live full time in 5th camper. We are retired and work camp so we move around different seasons. We like to sleep a little cooler than most summer time tem set on 73-74 but in winter time we try to leave bedroom with no heat or at most if real cold very little heat which makes the air in tube even colder. We are below Ocala now with room at 74 degrees and it takes a couple of hours but then wake with cold nose. What do you do if your nose gets cold lowest setting on my ResMed is 60 degrees beside setting it on 60 degrees any other suggestions. ?
Now question for Chicago Granny about collar. Does the collar not make your neck and lower part of your head hot ?? I would love to keep my mouth closed and want to try a collar have tried chin strap when I used my nose pillows but now using FFM and still wake with dry mouth. Use moisturizer which helps some do not have dry mouth during the day time just when using FFM and sleeping.
Thanks to both of you any help appreciated. Larry

Re: Stopping Dry Mouth
Not Den but I use a S9 machine which uses a heated hose like the AirSense machine and he doesn't so maybe I can help.Seeing You wrote:What do you do if your nose gets cold lowest setting on my ResMed is 60 degrees beside setting it on 60 degrees any other suggestions. ?
If you are seeing temperature choice that means you are using the heated hose.
Did you know that you can turn off the humidifier portion (or use 0.5 to 6.0 humidity selection) and still use the heated hose but you can use any temperature that you want to use to keep ice cube nose away?
Just go into the clinical setup menu and change the Climate Control selection option to "Patient"...then you can change hose air temp and humidity choice (or turn it off for pass over) independently of each other.
I just tried it with my S9.
I can turn the humidifier off totally and still use the heated hose at any temperature I want
Or I could use a minimal humidifier humidity selection and still use any hose temp I want.
I believe the same thing is offered in the AirSense 10 machines that are supplied now.

Re: Stopping Dry Mouth
My bedroom is approximately 60 - 65 degrees year round. What I do to warm the air coming through the machine and hose is to pull most of the hose directly under the covers and route it next to (or slightly under) my body to try to warm it. My machine is on the nightstand next to my bed and is only about 6 - 8 inches from the covers, so there's only a minimal amount of hose that's exposed to the air. Works pretty good most of the time and is pretty comfortable for me.Seeing You wrote:I have two questions one for Wulfman as to Passover humidity. Sorry it took awhile to respond, but when I tried earlier I was getting so many SQL errors from the forum server, so I waited till I could get on.

If nothing else is stopping your dry mouth and you're stuck in a rut, try this Orajel Dry Mouth Moisturizer. Here's the cheapest price:

I use it every night and have for several years.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I buy Orajel Dry Mouth Moisturizer from drugstore.com (http://www.drugstore.com/orajel-dry-mou ... /qxp153412) and use my shoprunner account to get free shipping on orders over $25. It's slightly cheaper this way than buying from dentist.net who don't accept shoprunner and require a $75 purchase to get free shipping.Sir NoddinOff wrote:If nothing else is stopping your dry mouth and you're stuck in a rut, try this Orajel Dry Mouth Moisturizer.
