Cat Chewing....

Post by funky-rat » Thu Sep 24, 2015 12:41 pm

Not on the hose itself, but on the rubber tip. When we lived in our old house, she chewed off all of the rubber ends on the doorstops, and we had to replace them all with hard plastic, which she'd gnaw on, but not ruin.

We moved in July. I first noticed it last month. She chewed on the end of the hose where it attaches to the machine. She finally chewed hard enough to crack the rubber. I got out a spare hose we had, bought a hose hanger for another reason, but started actually disconnecting the hose from the machine and wrapping it up around the hanger. But last night, I noticed more tooth marks in my hose tip, and my husband found some in his. I know it's the ginger cat because the tuxedo is small, and his mouth wouldn't fit around that hose tip.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep her from doing that? Keep her out of the bedroom is not an option, and even if it was, our bedroom gets hot when we close the door - keeping it open helps keep air circulating.

You may want to check out the Ssscat Cat Spray Control system. It's a canister of harmless gas with a motion detector attached that senses movement and sprays a puff of air at the cat if it comes near. If you placed one near each machine I bet she'd get the hint pretty quickly!

Go figure - I can walk while chewing gum but apparently I can't quite grasp breathing while sleeping.

I made a "sock" to fit over my hose end to keep any creepy crawlers out of my hose...... might work for you to keep the chewer at bay
I just put it on the hose end every morning when I get up and take it off when I go to use my machine at bedtime. She must like the taste of rubber... yuck

Cheers

Maybe she has a craving for sulfur in the rubber, maybe there's a way to ingest it. Jim

Get a plastic container, and put the hose and mask in it.

They don't like citrus smells, so maybe wipe some orange or lemon on the thing for a few days...

My go-to would be a mesh wastebasket, inverted with something heavy holding it down.
The hose and mask could air out, and Puss cannot gnaw through wire!

Thanks for all the good ideas! I think I'm going to try the sock first - simplest - and go from there.

I was actually removing the hose and putting it on top of the laundry sorter - she can't get up there, and even if she would manage to get there from the dresser (highly unlikely), the top was made of a wire mesh, and she wouldn't walk on it. Heck - she's afraid of the air return in the floor of the living room for the central air.

But, I got a Hose Buddy, and you have to velcro the hose in place, and I didn't want to be taking it up and down every day, so I have been taking the hose off the machine, and wrapping it up at the top of the Hose Buddy. I think that she was standing up, front feet on headboard, and got the tip that way. She's a tall cat.

For my nitetime 'rubber lover/chewer kat,' I remove the hose from my mask, point the blowing air at him and he flees! Works every time! Good luck!

I used to watch a program called "Psycho Kitty". The woman helped clients with cat problems and she dealt with a cat that chewed/ate cotton articles. She told the owners to have the cat checked at the vet and it turned out to be a deficiency in the cats diet. Corrected the diet...and corrected the chewing. Maybe there is something that needs to be checked out...just a thought....

I disconnect my hose and place it in my nightstand drawer when not in use. Makes it really hard for them to get to it.

I keep my machine in a nightstand, The machine and hose stays in the middle drawer and the mask goes in the top drawer. I actually got this cabinet because i was afraid my cat woul dpuke it on while I was at work. She seems to like going up to high places and creating as much mess as possible.

I've never had any problems at night. Quinn has stepped on the power button a couple times, but no big deal. I just turn it back on. And Jay Jay slapped my mask once. I keep forgetting to check the data and see if my machine turned off early that morning. He doesn't normally approach the blowing air.

I don't know why this is difficult, but simply remove the hose and place it into a drawer and close it. Take it out in the evening when it's time to go to bed. End of problem.
