Chin Strap Reccomendations

Post by CaptainRaven40 » Tue Aug 25, 2015 6:28 pm

Hello all. New to cpap. I have been using it since the 11th of this month. I am now using the Airfit P10 for her because I had a DME nice enough to give one to me after they told me I had tried 2 masks and that was all I was allowed to try and "swap". I have only slept with it one night, but I have used the Pilairo Q and also the Wisp. I catch myself sometimes with my mouth open and drooling (I know not pleasant). It will happen for a few minutes a night and I want to get the most out of my therapy that I can. So I was wondering who here uses chin straps and what do you use and or recommend as well as what to stay away from? Thank you all so much!!

I am curious as to what others say as I also need help with a chinstrap. I tried the ruby replica on cpap.com but it made my face very itchy and I slept like crap with it.

I use ResMed Chin Restaint...you can Google it for a picture. It is very simple..made of soft cloth...comfortable enough and does the job for me. I have also tried taping my lips shut but just don't like the idea..though it works well.

Here's the real Ruby chinstrap by Puresom:

Be sure to get the adjustable one with velcro... it will give you a better fit.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

I've been using the Respironics one with my full face mask, and so far it's working rather well. The Ruby pushed my chin back and hurt, but the Respironics one doesn't do that and is comfortable.

Lately I have started taping my lips shut because even if your teeth are held together by a chinstrap, you can blow air out though your lips and they will flutter. I discovered this one time when I was waking up - that this is what I was actually doing.

There is one special tape that works really well because it is designed to stick to skin - 3M Micropore tape and it comes in various widths. Just fold over a half-inch at the end to make a handle for removal. Then rip off the piece to be longer than your mouth is wide and apply the tape horizontally and use it to hold your top and bottom lips together. You will find that you can still breath slightly though the tape, but not enough to have a major leak. Some people cut a slit in the middle of the tape but I didn't find it necessary to do so.

It's another tool. Try it if you like. I find it much more comfortable than a chinstrap and got used to it quickly.

Thanks for the responses! Taping won't be for me. I have facial hair and I don't see that being a very pleasant ending I am going to keep my eye on my data and keep doing research on chin straps. Thanks again!

The most comfortable chinstrap.....https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pursle ... otton.html
I haven't needed it in years, but when I did...it was great. Read the reviews.

Mouth taping doesn't have anything to do with facial hair unless it goes right up to your lips (literally). I used to mouth tape with a full goatee for a few years with no problem.

I tried using a chin strap, but always awoke with impressions on my face that lasted for hours. Lots of adjustments didn't help. I saw something in the forums about using a neck brace and I ordered a Caldera Releaf Neck Rest (snazzy Jade green) from Amazon for about USD$20. http://tinyurl.com/Releafneckbrace
It holds my jaws together tight and leaves no telltale impressions. Every now and then I'll breathe through my mouth, but nothing like I used to. I use it on airplane trips as well to replace the inflatable air pillow I was using.
