I had a sleep study for catathrenia symptoms (night groaning), but ended up being diagnosed with OSA 9-episodes a minutes, with desats. (I haven't gotten the actual report yet. I'm an RN, so not knowing details is killing me).
I got my ResMed AirSense 10 Elite with AirFit N10 nasal mask yesterday. I slept for about 6 hours last night on 7 (my prescribed dose).
I woke up a little groggy at first (usually I'm a wide/shocked awake person). And I feel almost hyper-alert. Almost to the point of dizziness. And I'm so aware of my breaths today, I feel like I'm hyper-inflating my lungs almost.
I read that all back and it sounds super dramatic....lol. I just don't know how else to explain. I didn't have any particular discomfort-even during my sleep study, but I was finding I had a hard time maybe realizing I was sleeping. Like I woke up and couldn't tell if I had been asleep or not? Very weird. And during my study I had my first VIVID dream in over a year. I hadn't had a memorable dream in a long time.
I don't know what kind of advice I am looking for, maybe just that I'm not crazy? Maybe?
Thanks for your time,
Amy

Re: Newbie with lots of questions :)
Hi Amy,
Perhaps you are just adjusting to the "newness" of it all. My first night was a couple of weeks' ago and it was pretty bad, even though I slept a few hours. My eyes were dry, I felt like I kept waking up and not being sure if I was awake or not, and also the mask fumbling. Even 2 weeks later I find that I have trouble relaxing once I am in bed and have to give myself a mental "nudge" to calm down and relax. It takes time to get used to all of this stuff, even though you are a medical professional who probably understands more than most.
You'll do fine just keep plugging away. Have a great and restful night!

welcome, nurse!
no you aren't being over dramatic and definitely not crazy. you are one of the lucky ones that got immediate benefits. congrats!
as you roll on, you may want to get a hold of a free software program called sleepyhead. it will help get every bit of data out of your machine. i'm just now ready to learn what it's all about.
also, i too had that hyper inflated lung thing going. took a few weeks for it to dispel.
and the vivid dreaming? ain't it grand when that comes back?
again, congrats on joining the hose head community.

Re: Newbie with lots of questions :)
Congratulations! Nice to be getting some rest, isn't it?
Unfortunately, it looks like they gave you a machine that is not auto-adjusting. We would always advise people to try to get the auto cpap version of the machine and go so far as having the doctor write a prescription for the specific model.
The Elite model you have, according to the resmed site, can not adjust and increase the pressure for you during the night if you need it.
Was the machine provided through insurance or did you buy it yourself? Insurance pays the DME the same amount of money whether they give you the base model or the top of the line - the only difference is how much profit the DME makes.
I'm sure that if I'm wrong, others will chime in.

Re: Newbie with lots of questions :)
Thanks for all the positivity!
It does not auto adjust, but according to the myair.resmed site that it auto-uploads to it seems to be working. The 2nd night of therapy I had .5 episodes per hour, and last night it was down to .3 per hour. Compared to my original 9, that seems pretty good!
I just started a new job and have new insurance as of the first, and I "fear" that I may have to return this one and get one from a different company, as my employer is a large medical provider and relays our dme use to their own company. I don't mind, it's a pretty good company, I just wished I had thought of that before getting this one!
Is there a better machine to ask for?

Since you like to know details as stated in your first post. Check into using Sleepyhead and seeing the graphs of your CPAP use. Here are helpful links. https://sleep.tnet.com/resources/sleepyhead
