Need a smaller travel unit....looking at X1

Post by sosha » Sat May 30, 2015 1:59 pm

Hi there! New to the forum, even though I've been hanging for a few months. I started on APAP last September, and have had my AHI drop from 28 (without) to less than 1.5 with. All I know is I no longer snore or stop breathing when I sleep, nor take naps on the weekends. So, I assume it's all working as it should.

I travel to warm, humid climates for vacation a few times a year. I'm usually staying on a boat, and accommodations are tight. My machine worked great last trip, but it just took up too much space in both luggage and cabin. So, I'm looking for a smaller unit.

I'm looking at the X1, and am looking for opinions. On my Airsense 10, my set range is 12-14. According to Sleepyhead, I'm usually between 12-13.6. For a 1-3 week vacation, I'm thinking I really don't need to spend the extra $$ on the auto version of the X1. Setting at 13 should be good enough, right?

Interested in your advice. Thanks much!

I would think 13 cm would be a good cpap pressure to try.
You know you can change your machine over to cpap mode and give it a try to see how you do on it.

You are used to the super quiet operation of a new Resmed.
Get ready for a much LOUDER device.
Do not let the numbers deceive you.
Loudness is measured in decibels, which is logarithmic.
If loudness is not a problem for you, never mind.

I didn't realize I could change my machine to CPAP. will give that a try.

The Z1 is really noisy? Hmmmmm. May have to think a little more.

You didn't mention whether you took your humidifier with you when you last traveled with your Airsense 10. Since you travel to humid locations, you may not need to take the humidifier with you. I don't know about the Airsense 10, but earlier Resmeds, and all Philips-Respironics System Ones all can operate without a humidifier attached. This means that when traveling, you can have an xpap that's about half the size of the xpap + humidifier combination.

If you try this, be certain to take the xpap adapter plate with you. You need it to use the machine without a humidifier!
I'm workin' on it.

I did take it on the last trip. But, I have since bought the cover to it.

My DME provider (sleepquest) has been extremely helpful in ways to minimize my existing setup. Kudos to them!

First time posting here but I've been a CPAP user for over 4 years now and have been lurking for quite some time.

My first (and home) unit is a Respironics System One with a humidifier. I've traveled to Asia 3 times in the past 4 years and brought my complete unit (w/humidifier) with me, lugging it through the airports and all. Since it is fairly humid in Asia most of the time, when I go on a 2-3 day side trip to a different country, I will leave my humidifier behind to at least cut my CPAP equipment volume by a third. This would result in some dryness in my throat when I wake up in the am. I tried using the disposable in-line HME (heat moisture exchanger) but it did not notice any improvement with it. Over several recent short domestic trips, I've traveled without using a humidifier with the dryness in my throat dependent on the humidity of the room where I sleep. Overall it's been tolerable, I'm just not sure what would be the effect if this was during the peak of winter when the air is super dry, I guess we'll see.

To further reduce my unit weight and volume when traveling, I decided to purchase a refurbished Transcend Auto for use as my travel unit. I debated between the Z1 and the Transcend but decided on the latter due to cost and the reports on the Z1 being a much louder unit. I also do not require any battery power use which would have made the Z1 more appealing (if I did) because of its overall size with a battery pack. The Transcend is just as quiet as my System One according to my wife. I notice a slightly louder hissing noise during breaths with the Transcend over the System One but nothing that bothered my sleeping.

Overall I've been happy with the Transcend, ending up with a CPAP bag about 1/4th the size when I previously traveled.
