CPAP machine.

Post by dlaleh12z » Mon Jun 01, 2015 11:43 pm

Hello, I have Kaiser through obama care. I went through testing for sleep apnea. I was diagnosed for it and order was given for a CPAP machine and Humidifier. Received mail from Kaiser that my DME coverage does not cover the machine. Fill appeal and was told that still was not covered by my DME coverage. What can I do now. Thank you for your help.

Be more careful of how you and your friends vote. Call the Whitehouse, but don't climb the fence. SERIOUSLY, I don't know, I just know to keep as far away from government control as possible. Jim

Maybe there is are mediators, that can help. Get documentation of exactly why they are denying your claim. Then find out how to dispute it. Jim

Read -- The OP has filed appeal and been denied. His/her Kaiser plan does not cover DME. This has nothing to do with Obamacare. Kaiser has had these no-DME plans going way back before the Affordable Care Act.

dialeh, your Kaiser plan should still cover titration. It is (or should be) part of the diagnostic process. Standard practice for Kaiser is that after diagnosis the patient is sent home with an auto-adjusting CPAP machine (aka APAP) for a week to help determine the needed CPAP pressures. This is Kaiser's machine, not a new machine being provided to the patient. After a week of titration you return their machine and a Kaiser doc determines the needed pressures and can then write the prescription for CPAP/APAP. You need to have the doc/sleep medicine department release the prescription to you so that you can buy a machine privately. Secondwindcpap.com is a trustwothy vendor of gently used and new, open-box machines. Our forum host cpap.com is also a quality provider of new cpap machines. If you need more of a financial break, we have some trusted forum members here who sell used machines from time to time. And we have a lot of experienced folks here who can help you get adjusted, fine-tune your machine settings, etc.

I had Kaiser at the time I was diagnosed three years ago and was in the same boat as you -- no DME coverage. Crappy deal. And it is not because of Obamacare. I also have an Affordable Care Act plan now (a Blue Shield PPO plan) and it does cover CPAP equipment and supplies.

THere are some people on this list who sell lightly used machines at a good price. Look for sellers who have a longer history here, not somebody who came here just to sell a machine. Also, you can find a decent used machine on craigslist, but you will need to read up on machines here first so that you get a decent machine with full data.

I just saw a Resmed S9 autoset for $250 in the Seattle area on craigslist.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

There are several good sellers on this list who can be trusted. That is why I suggested those who have been here a while. And with craigslist, you can test it before you buy. That is how I got my backup machine. We met at a Starbucks and tested it before handing over the money.

Have you seen the new Obamacare CPAP machine? It's really slick looking and has the Obama logo on it. Works in reverse however. Sucks air instead of pushing air.
