Vitamin D

Post by Noctuary » Mon Jun 01, 2015 10:59 am

I had a blood test for vitamin D, B12 and folic acid; I called the doctor's office and was told that the doctor recommends 5000 IU of D a day.

Is low D a factor in sleepiness?

It looks like according to Dr. Google , that is a definite possibility.

https://www.google.com/#q=vitamin+D+sleepiness

What was your level?

And what about your B12 and Folic Acid levels since I am guessing that low ones could also be a factor in you feeling sub-optimally.

Unfortunately, I forgot to ask what the levels actually were; I'm going to call back later.

I have been following my numbers for the past 5 years, as well as researching what they should be.

Vitamin D level below 30 is considered deficient by the government. My research suggests that between 50 and 80 ng/ml is optimal. The closer to 80 the more problems you are likely to avoid. My last test showed 75 after taking 18,000 IU per day for the past year. Vitamin D toxicity does not occur until you test over 100.

B12 levels between 400 and 1200 are considered normal. Mine has been consistently off the charts. I have been talking at least 1000 mcg per day for almost 2 decades. I am not aware of any toxicity for B12.

The best source of Vitamin D is sunlight, but if you live far from the equator and spend most of your time in an office like me, that's not always possible. If you take a Vitamin D3 supplement, be sure that it's a liquid gel capsule or just a liquid (in a dropper bottle)--not a tablet--and you should consider taking a vitamin K2 supplement and making sure your diet is supplying plenty of Vitamin A (e.g. yellow and orange veggies and fruits, egg yolks from pastured hens, etc). see http://chriskresser.com/how-to-keep-you ... aleo-diet/ and http://chriskresser.com/can-vitamin-k2- ... r-disease/

I take a supplement by Thorne in liquid form (actually it's an oil) which has both Vitamins D3 and K2. My Vitamin D levels, over the course of a few years, went from 17 to 70. I eat a lot of fermented veggies and try to have chicken livers often (since my kids won't touch them that's a bit hit or miss).

I can't say for sure What health benefits there are but I catch "colds" very infrequently since I started taking D3-K2 supplement, I seem to tolerate some sun without instantly burning, considering I don't get out much (because of fragrance allergies, it's really hard for me to find a good sunscreen I can actually use). It has not made a difference to my sleep quality.

Lot's of people think higher serum levels (50-80 ng/ml) of Vitamin D promote good health. Unfortunately, I don't think it's been proven. However, that's where I try to keep mine because it does seem to be a very important hormone, key to many physiological functions. Here's 16 pages of thoughts on the subject:

I'm supposed to take 10,000 IU a day. Now I'm not sure what to do.

What is your current level and what does your doctor want it up to?

You said "5,000" now it's "10,000". What's up with that?
Why not take 5,000 as the Dr recommended?

BTW, 2000 IU per day was sufficient to raise my level from below 30 to above 50 in about 30 days.

Edit: Sorry. I started with 4000 not 2000. I take 2000 per day to maintain.

5000 twice a day was what the nurse said. I plan on going by there to pick up a bottle so I'll find out what my level was.

Now, I'm NOT recommending this, but I've heard it's safe to take doses up to 50,000 IU a day. So don't worry about 10,000 but do make sure that your diet has ample Vitamin A and consider taking a K2 supplement as well.

Be sure you get K2, another oil-based supplement, and not K-1. If you eat veggies you probably get K1, and K1 can interfere with blood clotting if you are on a blood thinner.

That is why people on blood thinners are supposed to eat a consistent diet and check their INR levels on a regular basis. It is not that you can't eat greens with Vitamin K, you just have to monitor your status.

I take a prescription of 1 Vitamin D of 50,000 units per week. My last blood test in June of last year was 42.

The doctor renewed my prescription at that time. Good Luck getting it all figured out.

I wish you well...

As one who is very sensitive to supplements in addition to meds, I was dreading being prescribed this amount when my vitamin D level was tested last year because this seems to be standard practice by many physicians when levels are low. Fortunately, my level was fine and the issue was moot. But if in the future, it tests low, I will ask to be allowed to take alot less even if it takes longer to get up to the right amount.

Glad your level seems to be going up Bill.
